Thomas, born in 1797 married Ellen about 1822.  Joseph born in 1824, Thomas '28, Mary '33, James '35, Ellen '37.  Emigrated to Canada around 1840.

I am trying to determine the parish that my family was born in and any further info prior to the birth of Thomas in 1797?

I have some updated information that indicate that he might have lived in Kerry instead of Derry??

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking into the family's emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew where they arrived in Canada it may be a place to find more information-and perhaps even an exact place of origin. For immigration information  in Canada check the National Library and Archives at the following weblink: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

You could also try searching for the family in the Tithe Applotment Books. These land records were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. Even though they do not give any genealogical information they can be used to tie a person to a specific place. You can search these online here:

With regards to finding information prior to Thomas's birth, the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Also, as the Church of Ireland was the official church at the time, the bulk of information that does exist is often found in these registers.
