Hi

I have just discovered your site.   I decided to try and do my mother's irish side.  I have the following taken from the 1901 and 1910 census and land tenures and information from pictures my mother had.

Joseph Powers is buried with wife Mary Ellen Reid and their son James at Rosnakil.  Joseph was born 1850 and died 1935.  He lived in the family home at 7 Glinsk.  I do not know when Mary Ellen died.  I am presuming it was sometime between 1896 and 1901.  As 1896 her last child was born and she is not on the 1901 census.  They had 4 children - marjory (dob 1888), james (dob 1890), joseph (1893) and mary ellen (1896),

Marjory left Ireland for America and met Patrick Hartnett.  Francis, Bobby, Joe, Gerald and Walter are the children  of Patrick and Marjory.  Marjory is no longer on the 1910 census.

James stayed at Gortnavern until he died in the seventies.  He was single.

Their son Joseph - I know nothing about.

Mary Ellen left and went to Scotland.  Where she married Thomas Walker.   Lived in Scotland until her death in 1965.

I think Joseph Powers father was Joseph Poer..

Margaret Powers (Joseph's sister) was single and it seems that she stayed with him, and looked after the children.

He was a farmer, all presbyterian, All children could read and write.  His sister Margaret could not.

Leatbeg and Glinsk seem to have connections as my mother has photographs of these areas.  Also the name Dill Power and Sam Power seems to be cousins.  Also Joe McNutt from Leatbeg seems to be a cousin (I have a photo with this written on the back).

I would be interested to hear if there is any links with anyone on this site.

Cheers

Yvonne

I attach below a variety of pictures.    The group one we do not know where it has come from whether it is Scottish or Irish but we think it may be irish because of  my grandmother.  She does look pretty young and is standing next to the tall gentleman.

Another one she is standing outside 7 Glinsk with her friend.  We do not know who this is maybe someone may be able to enlighten us.

You may want to add stories about your ancestors to our XO Chronicles site.

  • Hi Yvonne,

Thank you for getting in contact and Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I would like to help you research the Power family from Glinsk, who knows , hopefully it may to connect you with somebody local with family connections and knowledge to add. I have to agree with Roger, you have great photographs and information on your family, you should add them to the Ancestor Page for the Parish of Clondavaddog (Fanad). I would be glad to help you with this. XO Cronicles - Ancestors Page for Clondavaddog (Fanad)

I came across Josesph Power and Ellen Reid homestead in Glinsk, Fanad in the 1901 and 1911 Census Ireland. I attached both Records (below) for any interested persons that may be reading this post later on.

You mentioned Yvonne that “Leatbeg and Glinsk seem to have connections as my mother has photographs of these area”, I think I might have found what this connection might have been - Ellen Reid’s family, before she got married came from Leatbeg, Fanad, I attached links for the Marriage of Joseph and Ellen Reid and the Birth's of their Children below (irishgeneology.ie).

Marriage Record –  Joseph Power & Ellen Reid (m.03May1883) – Fathers Joseph Power, Glinsk & James Reid, Leatbeg, Fanad. Marriage - Civil Record

Children of Joseph Power & Ellen Reid

Margery Power – Born: 09 Sept 1886, in Glinsk   Birth - Civil Record

James Power – Born: 02 Feb 1890 in Leatmore, Fanad    Birth - Civil Record

Mary Ellen – Born: 16 May 1895 in Glinsk    Birth - Civil Record

Joseph Power – Born: 24th January 1893, in Glinsk   Birth - Civil record

    ______________________

Ellen Reid, wife to Joseph Power died on the 04th November 1895 from Typhoid Fever which she had for about two weeks.

    Death - Civil Record

Her death would have been registered in the Milford Workhouse. People would often attend the Workhouse not because they were poor but to receive treatment in the Fever Hospital that was there, and this of course would prevent illness from spreading to the rest of the family. This is a small bit of history of the Milford Worhouse I would have added recently.

I hope this information is of some help, I will be keep looking see what else I might find over the next few days.

  • Thanks for all this information.  At the weeekend I will start to put some information into the chronicles.   I attached previously a photo of a group of women.  Do you know if this would be irish origin or not?   Also, I have now got a cutting from a paper (unsure which paper) but it was Mary Ellen Power meeting her sister again 50 years later.   My gran went on the QM to New York and met her sister for the first time.  Margery wasnt on the 1910 census so she must of left Ireland for America round about that time.

I was looking at the death certificate for Mary Ellen in Milford Workhouse and maybe you can help.   Does her age say 22 or 42?  Was trying to work it out from the marriage certificate but it only says full.  I dont understand what that means.

  • Hi Yvonne, I went looking to see if I could maybe find a Birth Record match for Josephs Power's wife Mary Ellen Reid. I only found one that is closely matched and it would be a Mary Ann Reid , born 24th October 1864, daughter of James Reid and Alice Dill from Leatbeg, Fanad. This possibly is Mary Ellen. The name Alice Dill is a good find as this is where the name Dill name came out of in the Census Record

In regards to whether the Death Record says 22 or 42, it looks in my opinion like a 22, however we can not go by ages recorded on Death Records as more often than most they will be incorrect in age, as it always tends to be a guess by a younger family member or a Workhouse Clerk as it was in our case here.

Full Age on Marriage Records means the person(s) getting married are not underage as in teenagers they would most likey be 20 / 21 and older, although sometimes (not often) the married couples dont be entirely honest with their age.

  • Hi Yvonne, Let me know how you get on with instruction below. It is just you mentioned that James and George Reid may have be brothers in Leatbeg. This is possibly true with them owning Houses next to each other back in mid 1800’s. Attached also is the Griffith Records

Hi, I located a photo of James Power in Glinsk in possibly the late 50s. I've attached it below. It would appear he was a neighbour of my relatives.
