Hello,

I first would like to say thank you for adding me to your group. I have not been on Ireland XO in about a year. And this is the first time I have been to a group that is possibly a match on Dad and his sister's maternal side of the family.
Their Mothers-mother = Gallagher, Friel, McCafferty (McClafferty or Lafferty).
And their Mothers-father = Kindle, Flynn, Slattery.

The reason for this particular post is Dad and his sister match a "TJ" on GedMatch and TJ's admin asked me to join this group.

Dad (T785786) matches TJ: 62.8 cM/32.1 Largest segment match.
His sister matches TJ  65.4 cM and 32.9 segmt.
That is a good match, making them at least third cousins, second cousin twice removed..

This is a match that we might be able to identifly easy enough (or so I would want to tell myself)

I have run the GedMatch "in common with" and suprisingly there are 32 matches...Sadly none are close enough to warrent contact. When I look at Dad and his sister I believe they match on the 17-18 chromosome but I cannot see the others "in common with" matching the same area.
I have about 15 family members who tested but only 2 who tested at Ancestry my sister and 1st cousin who on GedMatch surprisingly only match TJ about 17.7 cM...??

Well that is enough information!  ;-)

I welcome anyones input and opinion. Just maybe someone can lead me in the right direction.

My moto "Never leave a rock unturned" and believe me I have looked under many a rock!

Kindest regards,

Suz Fitzpatrick

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

I went on Gedmatch and can see that there is a Fitzpatrick match with TJ and that TJ matches our parish liaison for Clondavaddog. I will send our PL an e-mail and alert him to your message.

  • Hi Suz

Thank you for getting in contact and Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I would be of course be interested in giving you whatever small bit of help I can, as regards researching your family ancestry and hopefully connect you back to where you family would have originated from in the Parish.

I was wondering how much information might you have on your Gallagher, Friel and McCafferty family ancestors, as each of these surnames are Fanad names that I would be fairly famililar with. Any information you can give on them would be a great help in finding a point to start researching back from.

I am not sure if you have been aware as of yet but Thomas J Callahan (Tj), passed away peacefully about month ago surrounded by his loving family in Philidaelphia, at the grand old age of 90 years. Thomas Callahan as I hear, had a special love for his heritage and will have left a remarkable legacy going forward for his own family and also for connected families such as ourselves that will benefit hugely in being able to peice together our own family connections be cause of his kind contribution to us all. RIP

I do have a large Callaghan family tree that takes in alot of other extended families connected within Fanad..if you would be interested I will try and see if I can connect the Gallagher, Friel and McCafferty names to Thomas Callahan's (TJ) parents that emigrated to the US in the early 1900's. Thmomas Callahan's father would have James Callaghan born in 1878 in the townland of Balloor, Fanad to parents James "Séamié Mόr" Callaghan and Madge Kelly.
