My family came from the Diocese of Raphoe and the Parish of Conwal & Leck. I got all that information from my Great Grandfathers birth/baptismal certificate. He moved from Donegal to Glasgow around 1905 and was born William Devenney from Magheralask, Glenswilly, Co Donegal on 2nd March 1885. On this were his father Charles and his mother Catherine (nee Martin) name along with the sponsors at his baptism Daniel & Rose Devenney.Charles married into the Martin family and was originally from Killymasny just up the road, but i am struggling to get any further details on this. 1 thing i do know is my Great Grandfather changed the spelling of my surname when all his children were born in Scotland. His surname was Devenney but he made all his sons and daughters ( 8 in total ) as Devanney's and therfore the reason my name is spelt that way today. My Great Grandfather was murdered in my town Hamilton,Scotland in 1971. what I hope to achieve from this message is to trace my roots further, but also try and find any family connections who are still living in Donegak to this day. Many ThanksDaniel

  • Hi Daniel,

I found this record in the 1901 Census.  It seems to be the same family as Catherine's mother is living with the family.

Catherine is not there though.  She might have just been out when the census was taken as it does not state that Charles is a widow.  You will see the spelling of Devenney is again different but this happened quite a lot.

This is the same family in the 1911 census - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Killymasny/Dru…

You will see that Charles has remarried.

I hope this helps and is maybe a start and I will ask around for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Emer,

that is great and thank you for this information. Seeing as there was a few children, I am hoping that there are still some family links living in the Letterkenny area.

Obviously William is my great grandfather, so there will be no links there and I am pretty sure that Edward followed him to Scotland too, so that may also be a dead-end.  As for the rest of the kids, I am none the wiser.

I shall go through this information more closely and see if I can find anything that will take me further.

Thanks for asking around and of course if you have any further details, please let me know

    Daniel :)
