I am seeking information re my maternal gr.gr.grandparents.  To date I've not been able to find any record relating to them as follows:

Charles LOGUE and his wife Margaret Bracey, who it seems died before 1840.  The family was Roman Catholic.  Their four children - Patrick (b. abt 1820), Daniel  (b. abt 1822) and his twin sister Hannah, and Margaret (b. abt. 1825) -  left Ireland early 1840 and arrived in Sydney, Australia, on board the "Resource"  in December 1840.  They were bounty immigrants.  The shipping records state they came from "Killigordon, Donegal", and also that their mother, Margaret Bracey, was deceased.  Presumably, Charles (their father)  remained in Donegal.  I'm hoping there is a record of Margaret Logue's (nee Bracey)  death and perhaps her burial site.  Also, information about the family.  Were they long-standing residents of Killygordon?  Were the children born and baptised in Killygordon?   I would be grateful for any information that could lead me to understand my Irish heritage better.

  • Statutory registration of deaths didn?t start in Ireland till 1864 so you won?t find a death certificate for Margaret. As a general rule the RC church doesn?t keep burial records, and so unless there?s a gravestone (which I?d say is unlikely because few people could afford one in those days) there may be no record of Margaret?s death or burial.

The RC parish records for Donaghmore start in 1837, so unfortunately Charles? & Margts marriage and the baptisms of their children are again before the start of any church or state records.

I looked to see if they are listed in the tithe applotment records (c 1820/1830) but those for that parish appear to be lost.

There are no Logue households listed in Griffiths Valuation for Killygordon in 1857. Nor any Logues in the village in the 1901 census.

Here are some of the names in the Killygordon RC graveyard:

  • Hi Charles,

The records at the local RC church, St Patrick's, date back to 1840 so they may have something there. The contact details for the church are on the main Donaghmore page.

I am from the area and would be familiar with the Logue name, however, I think Bracey may not be correct. I have never heard that name before, but that doesn't mean its not right.

Maybe 'Bracey' was incorrectly recorded by the ship's staff as was common. The name Brady and Bradley are common in the Killygordon area, so maybe this is where 'Bracey' came from.

  • Hi Newty,

Your message caught my eye as I've also been searching for information on the Logue family name. My gr.gr.grandmother was Margaret Logue married to John Callaghan. I believe they had at least 4 children, John [1857] Bernard [1865] Margaret [1870] and Patrick my gr.grandfather [1872]. According to their RC baptism records they were all baptised between the parishes of St. Johnston & Drumoghill.

Anyway in searching thru records for a Margaret Logue born in or around these parish areas i came accross one that I think might interest you which hopefully I've attached to this message - its for a Margaret Logue born [1844] in the parish of Killygordon. Her father was John Logue and her mother Margaret McDaid - sponsors were Patrick & Maria Logue.

Also, according to the link below the Ecclesiastical Parish was known as Donaghmore (Killygordon) in 1840
