Joe:
The family was shown as Sheils in the 1901 census and Shiels in the 1911 census. I have seen a number of situations in the censuses where Sheils/Shiels and Shields were used interchangebly. I assume your Joseph John was the 9 year old Joseph rather than the 20 year old John in the 1901 census. Either way, it does not appear that he was born in 1886.
The family lived in Attalatty townland in Mevagh civil parish in northwest Co. Donegal.
I can't help you with the McConnells.

Joe:
I located the 1875 civil marriage index record for Elizabeth Boyce and Hugh Sheils. You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1875. If you plan to get a copy let me know and I will forward instructions.

4 euros is around $5.50 plus your bank may charge a small foreign transaction fee when you use a credit card. Postage to Ireland is around $1.20.

Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.
