I am the grandson of Patrick B Haffey (Haughey) (b.1859 d. 1925) who emigrated to the United States in approximately 1880.  His home had been in Teelin.  His parents were Barkley Haughey (1815 - ?) and Ann Heekin (1836-1920) and his grandparents were Barkley Haughey (1775 - ?) Mary Heaney ( ? - ?).

Patrick's brothers and sisters were: James (1861- ?); Mary (1866-1950); Brigid (1867-1950); Bartley (1873-1955); Hannah (1877-1953); Ann (b.?-d. 1885); Con (1885-?).

In 1884, Patrick B. Haffey married Mary Ann Gallagher (1858 - 1919) in Missouri.  I believe that her parents were also from the Teelin area before they emigrated to the United States.  Their names were Patrick Gallagher (1829-1911) and Margaret Ann McCue (1834-1884).

On 2 trips to Teelin, I found some of the family gravestones in a Catholic churchyard in Carrick (near Teelin) but I do not know the name of the Parish.

I would appreciate any information you can provide concerning the Parish and my relatives.

The parish you are looking for is most likely Glencolumbkille. You can join that parish on our site and post your messages there.  The local parish information page is http://www.raphoediocese.ie/parishes/56-glencolmcille . It may be worthwhile contacting the parish offices for some assistance.

  • Since my origiinal post, I have found information from my last trip to that area in 2005.  Some of my ancestors are buried in the churchyard of St Columba's Church in Carrick just North of Teelin.  I have not been able to locate it on the interactive map however so I am not sure if it has merged with another Parish or if there is some other problem.

I also found that there are two 'lines' of Haughey families in the Teelin area and since there are so many with common first names, I have a difficult time determining which line each person is from.

The gravestones also contain additional information such as "Ommeryournean, Teelin", "Rhanakilla", "Ballymore Teelin" or just "Teelin".  Do those additions to the "Teelin" town name designate a certain family or area of the town?

I appreciate any comments anyone can give.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Ed,

The additional information on the gravestones are most likely to be placenames within the area. Information for St. Columba's Church, Carrick can be found here: http://www.raphoediocese.ie/parishes/56-glencolmcille .  You could email the church offices at stcolumbascarrick@gmail.com for further assistance.

    All the Best.
