I’m searching for the ancestors of a John McCrea (born 1776) who came to Canada in 1823. Mr. McCrea had seven children. Two with his 1st wife, a Miss Brock, William McCrea 1792 and Mary McCrea 1793. After the death of Ms. Brock who died in Ireland John remarried Ann Boyd. John had five additional children with Ann Boyd all born in Ireland.  Hugh  1801, Thomas  1802, Flora 1806, Ann 1809, and Diana birth date unknown but came to Canada with her parents in 1823. As I mentioned John came to Canada in 1823, where he joined his son William who came over in 1821. Some folks who married into the John McCrea family and came from Ireland are:

  1. Catherine Boyd, daughter of Robert James Boyd and Flora Alcorn, born 1810
  2. John McAFee, born 1801 in Ireland, who married Flora McCrea
  3. Robert Coleman, born 1803 in County Donegal, Ireland who married Ann McCrea

I am not aware of the Parish that the McCreas came from however the family came to a Baptist community

  • Hi Gerald

The closest record of a birth/baptism of John McRea 1776 Donegal is John Rea 1780 on www.rootsireland.ie/. I'm not sure if the Mc might have been dropped or adopted at some stage to make this your man or not.

If you purchase the record it MAY have parents' names (some don't) but will have the parish.

No luck with the marriage record or the children's births I'm afraid

This was great info.  Thanks for your work Col.

I too am looking for this same ancestral line.  I have recently done my FamilytreeDNA and I am waiting for the results of the Ancestry DNA test.  I'm hoping to make some connections that way.

Does anyone out there have any updates on the McCrea family?

I hadn't realized that John McCrea's second wife, Ann Boyd, was also the mother of some of his children. It's all such a puzzle to ponder.
