Robert McGregor, born County Donegal, 27 May 1787, married Margaret and may have emigrated to US about 1848 or before. His children were Eliza, Samuel, Hamilton, Joseph, and William James. William McGregor was found on the SS Wakefield leaving Liverpool 25 May 1848. His wife was Margaret Kennedy or Canady.

Would love to connect with family in Ireland.

  • Dear Constancee

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thank you for your query.

Would you be able to locate any further information as to what part of Donegal your ancestor came from? I?m thinking perhaps about land records or a family bible, anything that might give us a better indication of where in the county they lived. In the meantime you could search on www.rootsireland.ie (a subscription site) or www.familysearch.org for the McGregor family name. Helpfully, you do have a time span around which to search and this will ease the process for you somewhat. Donegal, as you know, is quite a big county and the parish records beginning at different times depending on the parish. I include a link to the Civil Parishes of the county for your information.

As a way of gauging generally the number of McGregor?s, if any, in the county in the early 1900s, you could have a look at the 1901 and 1911 Census of Ireland.

Best of luck with your search and Happy St. Patrick?s Day

  • Based on my research, Robert McGregor died in 1875 in Hillsdale County, Michigan. (See memorial #44885800 in Findagrave.com for more information.) His son, Robert McGregor, was reported to have been born in "Kildrane" in County Donegal. (see "History of Hillsdale county. Michigan, with illustrations and biographical sketches of some of its prominent men and pioneers.Johnson, Crisfield., Everts & Abbott.Philadelphia: Everts & Abbott, 1879. Page 241.)

There is no Kildrane in County Donegal that I can locate using Google maps, but there are several streets or localities named "Kildrum" in or near Killea: Kildrum Heights, Upper and Lower Kildrum, Kildrum Meadows.
