William Moore was born approximately 1818 in Donegal, or 14th June 1814 in ireland.

He could represent the same William Moore or William H. Moore who lived in Rockbridge Wisconsin.

He could be affiliated or related to the "Moore and Akan" who were involved with or purchased the sawmill at Rockbridge Wisconsin.

He could represent the same William Moore or William H. Moore who enlisted from Richland county Wisconin for the U.S. Civil War.

He could represent the same William Moore or William H. Moore who is found in the book "Wisconsin at Vicksburg", being a history of the U.S. Civil War.

We will try to post more details on William, as and if we can find them, and are seeking his origins and history.

We are also interested in the other William Moore(s0 above mentioned, and are seeking distinction or connection.

Thank you.

William Moore

death index notation 1,379,120,2557

William died at Woodland, Sauk, Wisconsin 26th June 1897. This according to Professional Genealogist Brendan at www.researchireland.com

Wisconsin Vital Records death index shows he died 26 Jun 1897 Sauk county, 01, p.0379, reel 20, image 2557, image#103654, seq.265468. We have not looked at the actual record or certificate yet.

William is found indexed at Resting Green Cemetery, ironton, Sauk county Wisconsin, Plot:Row 5/1, on the website findagrave.com The webpage says he was born 1814 and died 26 Jun 1897 age 83. Following his index is the notation: s/w Emma Wright.

The 1895 state census ffor Wisconsin, shows a William Moore in Sauk county. Line 22, rollv226.18

In 1880 William was 66 years old and living at Ironton, Sauk county, Wisconsin, on Mill Street, next to the Fitz-Gerald Boardinghouse. His ocupation is listed as farmer, and both he and his parents as listed as having been born in Ireland. He is living in the household of a James Hankerson or Hawkerson, age 41, a Blacksmith, (who might theoretically be William's son in law?). James wife is Syvia age 36, (but if she is William's daughter why is her listing in Ohio, PA, PA). Immediately after William, in the same household, is an Emma Wright age 36, who is noted as daughter. If by daughter they refer to James (head of house) per the census (impossible), and yet, again, if daughter of William, why does it says Ohio, PA, PA.?? [You will see herein further evidence to suggest Emma is William's daughter.]

In  1870 William is age 56, living in Ironton, Sauk county, Wisconsin, He is listed as a farmer, whose real estate is worth 1800 dollars and personal effects 750. A presumed son is listed in the same entry, Nelson age 29, a farmer, born Michigan, and (the same?) Mrs. Emily Wright age 22, not listed as born michigan.

There is not a William Moore age 46 in the 1860 index for Wisconsin.

There are two William Moore from ireland one 38 and another 58, and 52. All in different counties.

In the 1880 census, There is only one William Moore in Minnesota age 47 born Ireland in the HENNEPIN  1-DIST; MINNEAPOLIS. Another from ireland is 18 years old.

In 1860 Michigan, there are three William Moore from Ireland, 30, 31, and 42. Regards the 42, the children dont match.

In 1860 there are only 15 nationwide that match his age and ireland.

10th wisc. regiment had a captain William Moore who died and a sgt. Hardin G. Wright who died in the civil war. I dont know if is is a son and son-in-law (husband of Emily?) or not.

In 1860, there is a Wm Moore age 48 in Ironton, Sauk county, Wisconsin, born ireland, who must be William. His occupation is listed as farmer, his real estate worth 600 dollars and his personal goods 200. Others in the household, likely relatives, are, Hannah age 39 born NY, Nelson age 21 born, John age 15, Emily age 12, and Jennette age 9. All the youngsters are born Michigan.

They are also living with an M.Long from Ireland age 20, a mechanic, Mary J. 18 Michigan, and Henry 6 months Wisconsin. Perhaps Mary J. is another of WIlliam's daughters? Or (Mr.) M.Long Ireland associate?

Seeing as how Nelson and Emily match, it is surely the same William.

We have not been able to find a match yet in the 1850 census.

We have not had access yet to the 1840, 1830, census.

The the 1820 would be impossible to locate a child,  And the 1810 before immigration.

We have not yet been able to find a match on the ship immigration and naturalization index.

  • Hi,

Have you tried checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for information regarding William Moore or his relatives? The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/. Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Also do you know much about William's emigration? Dates, the reason why he left or who he might have travelled with, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city he arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, Castle Garden etc....), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.  The UK National Archives and the Public Records Office in Northern Ireland can both be quite helpful. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/default.htm

    http://www.proni.gov.uk/

Church records may also be of some use to you. Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations: in local custody, in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and at the Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast. PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society. For the rest of Ireland, almost all records are in local custody. It can difficult to locate these as many congregations in the South have moved, amalgamated, or simply disappeared over the last sixty years. Some Catholic registers are available form the National Library http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx . Or from  www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html  Others are held locally.

Extensive records for Co Donegal are available for a fee from http://donegal.rootsireland.ie/ .

I wish you the best of luck with your research.
