Hello

I would love to have someone help me with gaining any knowledge of my ancestors. James Carr was my 4th great grandfather. He was born in 1777 and died April 18, 1847. From my understanding he was buried at St. Catherine's Ancient Ruins in Killybegs, Upper Donegal. I've never seen a photo of his headstone, but I found a listing of the stone being present on a website that discusses improvements being made at the Ancient Ruins site. My Father would love to be able to visit this site sometime in the near future, but we would love confirmation that this is actually where our ancestor is buried. If someone could e-mail me a photo or any information; I would greatly appreciate it!

James Carr was married to Jane Dougherty (spelling unsure). I know that after his death; his wife and children left for the United States. We do not know if they knew anyone in the US before they arrived. Their sons were Francis Carr, Mark Carr, James (or Patrick) Carr, and Susan (Carr) Conway. If anyone could give me any further information about these people or their Irish family, I would LOVE it. I would really love to learn about their lives in Ireland. Thanks!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We do not have a parish liaison in the Killybegs area. I did some research on the Donegal Genealogy site and found the trancription of the James Carr gravestone and there is a map of the graveyard showing where the Carr stone is located. Lindel Buckley runs the web site and I believe she lives in Australia. You  can try to contact her and there is also a Marilyn who took pictures.  http://donegalgenealogy.com/stcatherineskillybegs.htm

  • Roger McDonnell,

Thank you so much for the information! I emailed Marilyn recently and posted to their website over a year ago (with no sucess). But........after your message, I found this website; www.killybegshistory.com/index.html

It had a photo! I'm SO excited and so was my Dad! If anyone has anymore information about the Carr family from here, please contact me. I know next to NOTHING about their lives in Ireland.
