I am looking for Francis McCloskey b abt 1830 in Ireland.

Frank was part of a family group that had McCloskeys, Cassidys, Laffertys (Laverty in Ireland?) and McBreartys all living close to each other and inter-marrying.
One of the McBreartys on my tree is from Killybegs, which is why I'm starting here.

Francis is Catholic and emigrated to Philadelphia, PA around the time of the Famine.
He was a sailor and was in the merchant marine, leading me to look in locations in Ireland near the sea.

He married Ellen Lafferty (in the US) or Laverty as I've seen it spelled in Ireland.
Ellen was born in 1840, emigrated to the US with her brother Edward, married Francis in 1863 and died in 1873.
I want to believe that Francis and Ellen came from the same part of Ireland, as they settled in the same part of Philadelphia, where they met and married.

Francis had a sister, Ann McCloskey.
She married Rodger (sometimes Roger) CASSIDYin the 1860s in Philadelphia.
Roger was also a sailor and in the merchant marine with Francis, so they may have known each other in Ireland. They certainly knew each other in Philadelphia, where Roger met Frank's sister and married her.

Roger's sister married Anthony McBrearty from Killybegs, Donegal.

All of the people mentioned here were born in Ireland between 1830 and 1840 and emigrated to Philadelphia, PA as a result of the Famine.
The exact emigration details are unknown due to the abundance of McCloskeys, etc emigrating to the US at this time.

  • Not sure if you're aware, but there was another McCloskey-McBrearty connection in South Philly in the mid-late 1800s.  Sarah McCloskey (b. abt 1846-d. 1920 was married to Charles McBrearty (b. about 1847-d. 1895).  They lived for many years at 1216 S. 20th St.  Whether Charles was related to your Anthony, or Sarah to your Frank, I wish I knew.  My own large branch of McBreartys also lived in the same neighborhood at the same time, and I have been trying to identify any connection with either of the two families above.

  • Not sure if there is any connection to yours but I have Sarah McCloskey m Thomas Ross living in Muff, Donegal somewhere between 1800 and 1820.  Their son Joseph Ross (b. 1821) emigrated to Australia 1841.  I recently became aware of other McCloskeys in Brisbane Qld who hail from same general vicinity.  As far as I can tell Sarah's mother was a McLeod.   Happy to help with details of Australian family if you ever think there is any connection.
