I am searching for my Francis McCloskey, who started my family line in Philadelphia, PA in 1863... then disappeared in the 1870s.

There is evidence that a Francis McCloskey traveled back to Ireland in the 1870s.
I found that a Francis McCloskey, married to Susan, died in 187?, with his will administered in 1877.
This Francis was a farmer. I don't know how long it takes for wills to be probated but it is possible that this Francis was sick for a while and died in ...1875... with his will probated in the years following.

I'm looking for more information about this Francis, who may be the father of my Francis.

He married Susan in the early 1870s which sounds like a second marriage.
Can anyone help me find out more about this Francis McCloskey?
Born about 1800-1810, married twice, one family that largely emigrated, a second wife with presumably no children. Which children stayed in Ireland
Roman Catholic.

Thank you!

  • The date of death was 23.1.1877 and probate was granted on 15.8.1877. Francis died intestate, so there was no will. In addition the probate file itself was destroyed in the 1922 fire at the Four Courts in Dublin. All that survives is the abstract (summary:

    Full Abstract :

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Francis M'Closkey late of Killybegs Commons County Donegal Farmer deceased who died 23 January 1877 at same place were granted at Londonderry to Susan M'Closkey of Killybegs Commons the lawful Widow of said deceased.

The death doesn?t appear in the Irish civil registration indexes.

There?s a marriage listed in 1869 in Glenties that probably fits your couple. (Volume 2, page 155). Francis M?Closkey to Susan M?Glenty otherwise Brady. That would indicate Susan was a widow. You would need to get the marriage cert to see which was her maiden name. You can order a photocopy of the marriage cert from GRO Roscommon. It should cost ?4. Quote the place, year, volume and page number on the application form. http://www.groireland.ie/

  • My 6x great grandmother was Susanna McCloskey born 1730 in Inver, Donegal, died in 1797 in Dunkins Creek, South Carolina. Not sure if there is any connection but thought I'd offer the information in case it helps you in any way. I have not yet found the names of her parents. She married James Minnis or Mann.
