~~Whitehill   (td of Drumhome) Ballintra Co. Donegal
From research carried it is believed that the following Coyle’s are buried in the Roman Catholic graveyard in Ballintra
James and his wife Annie Sweeney
Their daughters :-
Frances died 5 Sept. 1937 and Annie
Their sons:-
Bernard, James, Patrick & Aeneas
Their daughter Catherine married Charles Mangan on 14 Feb. 1885 – no further information
Their daughter Susanna married Edward Daly Acres Ballyshannon on 9 Jan. 1889 –no further information
Please contact me if you have any information about this family and if Catherine or Susanna had any family

The headstone is missing from the grave plot however the base still shows the family name Coyle

Our Coyle family came originally from Claggan in the townland of Dunmore Carrigart. The James mentioned above together with my Great grandfather Patrick and Rev Daniel E Coyle were all born in Claggan, so I would welcome any information about their Claggan origins, They would have been born circa 1800 - 1813 and left there circa 1830 - 1855

  • I am the Great Great Grandaughter of James Coyle and Annie Sweeney. I am the Great Grandaughter of Aeneas Coyle.

Aeneas relocated to Glasgow and married Catherine McGrory in 1886. I believe they had 3 children, Mary Agnes, Daniel and my Grandfather James Coyle.

I would love to know more about my family! Francis, please contact me.

    Thanks in advance,

    Catherine.

  • Hi Catherine,

My enquiry on this website was one of many efforts I have made over the last four years to trace any decendents of James and Annie (Sweeney) Coyle from 'Whitehill' Drumhome Co. Donegal.

James was my Great Grandfather's brother Patrick. My email address is  brockagh1@gmail.com Please forward your email address and any information you have and I will fill you in. Your commumication is great news after my years of research.

    Regards,

    Francie Coyle

  • Hi Catherine,

Attached please find record of 1891 Census showing Aeneas and family in Edinburgh. I obtained this two years ago and had planned to visit Scotland to follow up sometime over the next year. When you email me I will provide more information on what I have researched here in Donegal.

  • Dear Francis and Catherine,

My Great Grandfather was named James Sweeney. I believe he was born in Leat Beg, Fanad around 1835 and came to Claggan in 1861 together with his brother Patrick.  No one knew how they came to end up in Claggan, but years after my father died, I noticed a baptism for Bernard Coyle  in Claggan with James Coyle and Annie Sweeney as parents. I know the house the Sweeney's came to was previously owned by James Coyle and guessed that maybe Annie Sweeney was an Aunt or some other relative of James and Patrick Sweeney.

Patrick married but died young without children.  James married Anne (Nancy) McGettigan of Glenree and had 10 Children, many of whom emigrated to Pittsburgh. One son named Michael remained and married Annie Coyle of Kill (about 1/2 mile from Claggan) and one of their seven children was my father John.  I still own the house in Claggan and lived there from 1996 to 2011.

I would be extremely interested to hear anything at all about the Coyle family and the possible link through Annie Sweeney. I've always wondered about that connection. Thank you both for your time.

  • Hi Liam, Frances, Catherine,

My name is Eamon Coyle from Buncrana Co Donegal. My father was Bernard Coyle who was born in Glasgow in 1907.  His father was Aeneas Coyle who was married to Rose Toland (2nd marriage). Apparently my grandfather was married previously to a woman called Catherine Mc Grory in 1886. His first wife Catherine died in 1902 and he remarried my grandmother in 1904 in Derry.N Ireland. My grandfather's mothers maiden name was Annie Sweeney and his fathers name was James. We always knew that our grandfather was marred previously but never knew that there were any children by that marriage until my sister Kathleen read Catherine's post here.  If any of ye have any further information could you e-mail myself at ecoyle52@yahoo.com and/or my sister Kathleen at kathleenmccay@yahoo.co.uk.
