Looking for information regarding Owen and Ellen McGrath who migrated from Templecarn in 1861. Owen's parents were John McGrath and Alice McGree. Owen McGrath (1823?-1897). Resided n Braidwood NSW.

Owen is my great great grandfather. Any information would be appreciated.

Templecarn parish is in southern Co. Donegal on the border with Fermanagh near Belleek. I looked on Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and they don't appear to have the RC records for that parish.(I'm assuming your family was RC). I checked the Mormon site www.familysearch.org and they do have three films with RC records for the area. However, baptisms do not start until 1846 which would be too late for Owen's record. They do have marriage records back to 1836.

I also looked at the 1857-1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Templecarn and there were 4 John McGraths and 3 Owens McGraths. The name McGrath was very common in that area.

  • Thank you so much. I will look further at my documents. All the McGraths in my line list their birthplace as Donnegal and Owen as Templecarn. There were also some other placenames and I'll put them up on line as well.

    Thank you again.

  • I believe my ancestor John McGrath was living at Grousehall.

I don't know if you have looked at the 1901 and 1911 censuses. www.censu.nationalarchives.ie

There were 4-5 McGrath families in the 1901 census for Grousehall. I'm wondering if some of older McGraths were siblings to Owen?
