Hello:  I am trying to find my relatives.  Kane is spelt in different ways in the Scottish records I have checked.  Robert Kane and his wife Mary Cooper left Ireland with their daughter Mary for Renfrewshire,Scotland.  The daughter Mary, born abt. 1840?  married an Alexander Wilson in 1861 so they moved to Scotland before that.   They had a son Alexander Wilson b orn Oct. 4, 1862.  Their marriage cert. just shows Ireland.  Mary passed away with the last name of Robertson in Scotland.  I need to find out what parrish, county etc. they originaly came from.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  PS:  Mary and Alex. were married in The Church of Scotland so don't think any of them were catholic.

Thanks very much

Sheila

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates or who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure and their emigration information could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

Church records may be of some help to you: Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations: in local custody, in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm and at the Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast. PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society. For the rest of Ireland, almost all records are in local custody.

  • I can't find them on any Scottish Census under the name Kane etc. so I don't know if there are other members of their family.

I found the daughter Mary Wilson after she married Alexander Wilson but she was living alone with her son.  She later became a house keeper for James Robertson.  She eventually had several children with him.   I have found census with James Robertson.  When she died in Carrington Village, Scotland on July14, 1910, her name was Mary Robertson.  The son Alexander Wilson used both the Wilson and the Robertson last name.  When he married he used the Wilson name.

Hope this helps to jog someone's memory,.

    Thanks
