  • A birth in Comber would be registered in Newtownards. I searched the Irish civil indexes for Samuel Dougan/Duggan born 1880 ? 1885 in Newtownards but there?s none in the records. What?s the source of your information and how certain are you of it?

  • Wayne,

Samuel Dugan married Jane Ralph on 5th Sept 1857 in Castlereagh regn district.

I noted this Samuel Dougan of the right age and in the Comber area (Carnasure is on the edge of the town) but he married Christina Thomson in Castlereagh on 9th Feb 1867. A second marriage perhaps? Is this your family? (I can see his father is Alexander, as per the marriage details).

    Same family in 1901:

What looks to be Samuel?s death was on 20th May 1911 and registered in Newtownards. Surname spelled Dugan. You can view his death cert for ?2 on the GRONI site:

Sttutory birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864 and so for births before that you need to rely on church records. Assuming I have the right family, then they were Presbyterian. If they attended church in Comber, then there was a choice of 3. The Non Subscribing Presbyterian church has records starting in 1838, Comber 1st Pres records start in 1847 and Comber 2nd in 1852.  So I don?t think you are going to find Alexander Duggan?s marriage, (assuming they married in one of those 3 churches), and you won?t find Samuel?s baptism either. You might just find other children born later in the marriage, which may give you the wife?s maiden name.

Those records are not on-line anywhere, so far as I aware and you may need to go to PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast to locate them.

I note from the household copy of the 1911 census that both Samuel and Christina were born in Comber, so at least you don?t have to worry about searching in other areas.
