My GGgrandfather was John Charles Gordon b 1838 ? Came to Australia in 1860 we think on board the "transatlantic" as a crewman, a John Gordon of that vessel was in gaol for 3 months in Darlinghurst for an unknown offence. He then turns up married in the name of John Charles Clarke in 1864 he married Susannah Mary Lacey in Berrima NSW. He had five children, John Charles Gordon Clarke, Mary Martha Gordon Clarke, Alexander Gordon, unknown Gordon died young and William Henry Gordon. He died in 1872 in a mining accident at Gundary near Goulburn NSW and Susannah remarried Martin Power and moved to Kelso near Bathurst NSW. his death certificate gives his father John Charles Gordon but no mother. The certificate says he was born in Ireland but the Darlinghurst gaol record indicate he was born in Germany. . Recent inquiries suggest that he was the son of John Gordon and Harriet ? And born in downpatrick in 1837. I believe he was a Protestant as all the boys were but the girls were catholic.

need some help and advie please.g

  • Hi Ken,

That's quite a story! Interesting you joined the police with that background.

I searched baptisms/births on rootsireland.ie for John Gordon father John Gordon born 1837 in County Down and got 1 match. The match didn't come up when I added mother's name Harriet.

rootsireland.ie is a pay site so you need to purchase the record to get parents' names and the parish.

When you have the parish you can cross match on the Tithe Applotments and Griffiths Valuation (just google them they are both free to search.

Once you have the parish you can check to see if there is a page for that parish on this site under Find my parish.
