Robert Morrison m. Jane Magee with son, Henry b. 17 Apr 1869 (source: Ros Davies' site). Before Robert and Jane were married, they witnessed the marriage of Elizabeth Martin and David Little in 1856 2nd Dromore Presbyterian Church (source: marriage certificate).

Often, marriage witnesses were family members so I am searching the connection between Magee, Morrison, and Martin.  (did not find any possibles at Ros Davies's site for a Little connection, so not pursuing that right now)

Interestingly, Agnes/Nancy Magee m. Andrew Alexander 5 Feb 1864 at 1st Newtownards Presbyterian Church, witnesses were Thomas Martin & Ann Lundie (source: Ros Davies' site). Agnes' father listed as weaver.

This is interesting because Elizabeth's father, Joseph was also a weaver and I believe his father was Thomas, as his first son was named Thomas. Now altho this isn't the same Thomas (mine came to the US in 1856), perhaps this Thomas is a cousin of Elizabeth?

Any connections to these folks or ideas?

Thanks!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I hope someone researching the Magee/Morrison/Martin connection will get in touch. As an aside, have you searched the Flax Growers List for 1796 (given the weaver connection). It might  be a little early but you may be lucky. You could also search Slater's Directory in 1846:

  • Hi Clare,

thanks for your response. There are Martins and Magees in the Flax Growers list and Slater's but not sure how they are related to mine, if at all.

In Griffith's Valuation, I did find a Mary Magee in Listullycurran, which is where Joseph Martin was living in 1856. Is there a way to find who was living with or adjacent to her (no Martin listed there in Giffith's)? Her landlord was Isaac Patterson with Map Reference 38. Also confused that Griffith's seems to cover several years, so how do I know when Mary was living in Listullycurran?

    Again, thanks so much!

  • Hi Beth

With Slater's, Griffith's and other sources there is no real way of knowing who is who or if they are related as they only list the head of household not the entire family. Still though, it is a good idea to keep a record of the information in case, in future, another source becomes available that allows you to verify the already collected info.

The only way to find out who is living with a head of household is through the 1901 or 1911 Census. Generally speaking, the Valuation took place between 1847-1864. In some parts of Co. Galway for example, the Valuation year was 1855. If Mary was listed on the Griffith's it was probably because she was a widow. In order to see the correct maps that go with the Griffith's Valuation you will have to check http://www.irishorigins.com/ where you can match entries to the original maps.

You can find further info about the Griffith's at these two informative sites:

    Ask About Ireland: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/history-heritage/irish-genea…

    Irish Genealogy Toolkit: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Griffiths-Valuation.html

    Hope this helps

  • Clare, I so appreciate your assistance. I have been saving snips of records on my Down ancestors for decades in the hopes of finally finding a connection ;)

Since my ancestors left Down in 1856 and I don't know who there family was who stayed behind, the later census don't help yet.

I'm pursuing a search for records that might record more family data here stateside and hope that it will open something up.

    again, thanks so much!
