I'm looking to see if there are any existing McKeown and McGuigan relatives of mine in Newry or elsewhere in Northern Ireland or Ireland.

My great-grandfather was Thomas McKeown.  Thomas McKeown (born December 1861) married Elizabeth McGuigan (born September 1863) at Newry Cathedral on June 28, 1881.  Bernard Thompson and Katherine Crommie were their witnesses.  Thomas went to Brooklyn, possibly in 1882, just before their son, Thomas J.F. McKeown was born and baptized in May, 1882.  Last address in Newry was 20 Monaghan Row.  They too then left for Brooklyn and lived in Vinegar Hill.

  • Hi Mike,

McKeown is a very common name in Newry and many families still live there, in order to find out if they are related  we should have a look at your familytree and try to find out who married and had children for example. The problem with this is that records for after 1911 are not public  (1911 census) so finding living relatives could be a problem. The 1911 census shows 90 people with the McKeown name living in Newry. But there are no McKeowns left on Monaghan Row.
