I just found new information tonight about where my McDOWELL family may have come from. Last week I realized they were  Ulster Scots, now I have from information about where their ship sailed from.

Alexander McDowell came withis family to the port of Charlestown, So. Carolina shortly before May 28, 1767. On that date he and his sons [Andrew, James, and William] received a precept for bounty land in Fairfield County, S. Carolina. I have been searching ship's passenger lists for Andrew and family. I have not found them on a list.

I have narrowed the ships they may have come on down to  THE EARL of HILLSBOROUGH or THE PRINCE OF WALES . The former arrived in Charlestown on Feb. 19,1767 and the latter on May 14, 1767.

The agent for both ships was William Beatty. He advertised that he would be in Lurgan, Ballynahinch, and Dromore to meet with passengers.

I know you cannot find my family for me, but tell me about how the Protestans were living in 1767. And where might I like to visit when I come on a trip?

Thank you, Sharon

  • Hi Sharon,

There is a baptism record of Alexander McDowell 1828 in county Armagh on www.rootsireland.ie/

If you purchase the record (much cheaper & quicker than the GRO) you will get his parents' names and the parish.

  • Thank you for looking up Alexander.  Alexander was born a century earlier than 1828. Was that just a typo?

  • Yes, sorry Alexander McDowell 1728 in Armagh

I went through all the parishes and found that the parish of this baptism record is 'Armagh1 Presbyterean'. I'm not an Armagh expert so I'm not sure where this was / is but hopefully an Armagh volunteer might know.

  • Thank you, Col!  I find it amazing that his birth could have been 1728 when I just estimated his birth date from when his grandchildren were born and worked backwards to when Alex might have been born.

    Best Regards,

  • Sharon,

Alexander McDowell was my great-great-great-great grandfather. I was surprised and happy to find this site and your comments. I have been unable to locate a passenger list of his arrival in SC. I suspect he came over on the Prince of Wales. I have his will and some records in America. I would be interested in knowing your relationship. I will happily share what little information I have.

  • Alexander McDowell was my 5th great grandfather. My line goes through his son Smith McDowell who was born in South Carolina, USA. I also believe that he arrived on the Price of Wales due to the date of the  Council of Journal No. 33 in which he petitons for land. I have not been able to account for his son Hugh unless the William McDowell that makes a petition for land was actually Hugh. I also have copies of the wills of Hugh and James McDowell . I would appreciate any information on Hugh and William.
