I am visiting Dromore in late September and October this year, from New Zealand. I hope to find information about my great, great, grandfather and his forebears. William Shaw was born in  Dromore Parish in 1823. His wife was Susan Walker and they married in 1844. Any contacts or information would be much appreciated. Thanks. Wendy Mason

  • Hi Wendy, How exciting that you'll be going to visit your ancestors' homeland! I'm in Atlanta, GA so won't be able to greet you when you arrive. Since we don't have a Dromore Parish rep located in Dromore, I suggest you also post your message on the main County Down page.

Have you done any research to locate their townland or in which church they were married? Knowing this would help to define where to visit specifically. Under the research tab you'll find many links to help you find records for them. If you have trouble, please let us know.

Are you working with a travel agent? You might find some useful items at www.lisburn.com, both in terms of a local current directory of businesses, places, etc. but they also have a great History section.

    Every good wish!

  • Wendy, William Shaw is also my great, great grandfather. I would like to talk with you, and also live in New Zealand - Southland - close to where William Shaw farmed. You have more information about him than I have. My great grandmother was Charlotte Stevenson (nee Shaw).

I have just found your message, so hope you are notified of my reply. By now you will have had your holiday in Ireland.
