I am looking for any details of the parents of Mary McGivern and confirmation on whether she like her husband John Fitzpatrick (1810 Ballally) was also born in this parish but died in England in the 1870s. Mary and John came to Glasgow with their children in the  1850s. Mary died in 1852 in Glasgow and was born in 1811 (probably in this area). I'm interested in any possible records of their marriage and her parents.

According to a family bible John Fitzpatrick's parents were John "Jack" Fitzpatrick (1780-1836 - Ballally) and Catherine Healy (1780-1848) - any confirmation on whether that was here too would be good, as would any information about their parents or wedding.

  • You don?t say what denomination your family were but I?ll assume RC.

The spelling of Balally varies a bit in the records. Ballooly is found alit as is Ballela and Ballyilly. Garvaghy civil parish is in the RC parish of Dromore. Their marriage records start in 1821 and their baptisms in 1823. The baptisms are on-line on the rootsirelandsite (subscription) but their marriages, pre 1864, are not. There?s a copy of the pre 1864 marriages in the National Librray in Dublin and in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. A personal visit is generally required to access them.

You might however be able to locate John and Mary?s children in the rootsireland site.

Griffiths Valuation for 1863 lists an Andrew McGivern in Ballooly More. Patrick & Henry Fitzpatrick are both recorded in Balooly. (Balooly is half a mile north of Ballooly More). So these might be relations of your two families.

The 1911 census has a Fitzpatrick family who had evidently been living in England for a while:
