  • Birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864 and so for births before that you need to rely on church records. You don?t say what denomination John was. You generally need to know that to search the correct records. I?d hazard a guess that he was Presbyterian or Church of Ireland but you may know more accurately. Castlewellan is in the parish of Kilmegan. Unfortunately neither the Church of Ireland nor the Presbyterian churches there have baptism records that go back to 1807, so you may be out of luck trying to trace the family that way.

Here?s a link to a local Co Down site which has plenty of Kilpatrick/Kirkpatrick's listed, including some in Kilmegan. The name is very common in that part of Ireland (generally they are descendants of Scots settlers who arrived from SW Scotland in the 1600s.). Check under Kirkpatrick as well as Kilpatrick as the two names are interchangeable.

  • Thank you for your assistance. I blundered the name. He was John  A. Fitzpatrick and I think he was Catholic being that our whole family is.  I show his father Owen Fitzpatrick from 1770 Parish Kilcoo die 1873 Iowa and Mother as Catherine Gribben 1774 County down- died 1857 Iowa.

The link you send it promising.

    Thanks again.

  • Kilcoo RC records only start in 1832, so unfortunately again it'll be difficult to get any new information from that source.

  • Hi MJFORD

I know the last post on this trail is from almost 4 years ago but did you ever manage to get any further detail on Owen or his descendants ?

There may be a link to the Fitzpatricks of Kilcoo, Co Down that I am researching. I have found info on my Great Grandfather who was Patrick Fitzpatrick born to Owen And Ellen Fitzpatrick. Ellen's maiden name was Lindon or Linden. Patrick was born in 1838 and it is his baptism record in the Kilcoo Catholic Church records that I have found Owen and Ellen mentioned. Very dificult to get any further back than this which is why id be very interested to see what you found about your Owen from 1770.

    Many thanks
