Robert Bates born in Killyleagh in 1842 & died 1935, married Ann Watson 17 June 1864 in Killyleagh.

Sons - William, Robert, Thomas, Joseph & Mortimer Daughters - Jane, Annie & Sarah.

Joseph Henry Watson Bates [my Grandfather] moved to Western Australia between 1911 - 1916 and served in WW1 with the Australia Forces and later married Sarah McKeever in Moora - do not know where or when he died.

Robert Bates' father was also Robert Bates born 1808- died 15 Nov 1853 in Killyleagh & married to an Anne [unknown].

Would like to know more if possible about the Bates or Watson  families and will happily share information.

I looked up the 1901 and 1911 census records. Looks like the family was in Belfast in 1901 and in Killyleagh in 1911. Ann Bates died between 1901 and 1911. I found a death index record for Ann in the last quarter of 1901 in the Belfast registration district.

  • Thank you for your quick reply, I am really impress and did not expect help the same day as I have try on a number of sites to find out more and you are the only one to get back to me.

Thank you for the information of the 1901 Census for McMaster Street, I only had the 1911 Census. On the  inscription from the Bates family gravestone ,Church of Ireland,  Killyleagh it mentions that Ann Bates died 6th Nov 1901 so I wrongly assume she had died in Killyleagh and had not looked at the Belfast records. There are five children who died in infancy which names are not mention on the gravestone and this may help me to find them.
