Hello I just found your site while trying to research my 3 times great grandmother Sarah Anne Hutchinson. I have tried in vain to find her passage from Ireland to Canada on any shipping or passenger lists. I know she was born December 24, 1818 in Banbrdge, County Down, Ireland. She died in 1868 in Peel County, Ontario, Canada. According to her son William Hutchinson Colwell's diary his mother travelled by ship to Canada with a Moffat family in 1830. She was 12 yrs old. We are not sure if the family she was with was related or not. Another story has her parents on another ship but that they ended up in Australia. She married Nicolas Colwell in 1838 in Peel County, Ontario Canada. She had a little boy with her named John Hutchinson when she married Nicolas. Nicholas and Sarah raised John as their own. They also had 1 daughter and 5 or 6 sons. All born in Ontario. If anyone can help me find out her parents names or siblings names and a passenger list I would really appreciate it as it has been a Brick Wall for me for many years. Thanks in advance.

  • Jody,

In my experience ships travelling to Canada didn?t routinely have passenger lists till the 1850s, so I suspect that if Sarah Anne travelled in 1830 you won?t get her arrival details.

Her birth was before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland so you won?t find a birth certificate for her, However you might find her baptism, if you know her exact denomination. Some of the churches in Banbridge have baptisms for 1818. Do you know her denomination?

Copies of the surviving church records are held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. Their records are not on-line and a personal visit is usually required to use them. You can see what they have on this link:

There?s quite a lot of Hutchinsons in Banbridge mentioned on this Co. Down site. Some may be related to Sarah Anne, though it is a very common name in the area.

  • Thank you for the quick response Elwyn. I came accross a Baptismal record for a Sarah Anne Hutchinson for 1821. But that was just a review. I would have had to pay for the full record. It did not say what denomination. But I think she was Protestant. Thank you also for the links. Very much appreciated. Hope to talk to you soon.

You need to try and narrow the denomination further in order to be sure of searching all the right records. Protestant includes Methodist, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian etc. And they are not all on-line, so just because you have a possible match on-line doesn?t mean you are viewing all the possible records from Banbridge. (I?d hazard a guess she was Presbyterian, but perhaps you may know differently).
