My great x2 grandmother, Elizabeth McLinden, born in 1840, came to Australia on the first Potato Famine ship, the Earl Grey. Her parents were Hnery (Harry) and Sally Ann, both of whom were supposedly deceased when Elizabeth was sent to the Banbridge Workhouse. Henry was a cabinet maker, and had a warehouse in Bridge Road in 1842/3. That's all the information I have about the family.

I would love any information about Henry and Sally Ann. Unfortunately I do not have Sally Ann's maiden name. I know they worshipped at the Church of Ireland.

Thanks

  • The following records exist for the Church of Ireland in Banbridge. A copy is held in PRONI (the Public Record Office) in Belfast. They are not on-line anywhere so far as I am aware and so you would need to ge someone to look them up for you.

C.I. Seapatrick (Holy Trinity) (Dromore diocese) Baptisms, 1802-1995; marriages, 1804-45,1922-58 and 1963-94; burials,1810-79 and 1963-2000; vestry minutes, 1806-46,1870-88 and 1901-1934; register of vestrymen, 1870-1938 and c.1966-1991; preachers? books, 1872- 1956; marriage licence books, 1919-33 and 1945-2003.

Banbridge workhouse records should also be held in PRONI, which mayl contain a record of Elizabeth's arrival and departure.

  • Hi Gail,

I've had a bit of a look for the elusive Elizabeth.

rootsireland.ie has no birth record for her.

    There are 3 birth/baptism records of Henry McAlindens (or variations thereof) born 1816 &  2 X 1820

    A search for children of Henry McLinden 1840 + - 10 found Sara Ann 1841 X 3, John 1842 Mary 1844 Catherine Ann 1849

The Tithe Applotments only have 1 McAlindon in Down - Patrick in Drumgooland parish 1825.

Unfortunately noone has done your tree on ancestry so no joy there.

As you no doubt know Henry is on the Griffiths Valuation at Library Lane Banbridge Seapatrick.

Griffiths was done in Down in 1863-64 so he was still alive then.

I hope Ahogill's suggestions bring you more success than my searches!

  • Thank you both for your responses. One day I will get to Ireland and do the research I so badly want to do!

Col, I found Henry on the 1843 Griffiths Valuation, but did not think to look at anything further.

    I'll keep searching!

    Cheers.
