Need information concerning Henry Fearon, son of Mathew Fearon & Ann Magrath fron Laurencetown.  I thought I found him on 1901 & 1911 Census but just discovered that that Henry was the son of Edward Fearon.  Fearon appears to be a very common name in Down.  Catherine McEvoy from the Tullylish Parish has him listed as a son of Mathew & Ann & brother of Thomas & Roseanne Fearon.  Mathew & Ann were married in 1836.  Roseanne gave her birthdate as 1858 but it's listed in parich register as 1849.  I have no birth date or further information on Henry.  Thomas went to England & Roseanne married Hugh McManus & eventually went to Enniskillen.

  • Hi Mary

www.rootsireland.ie/ has the marriage of Mathew & Ann in Down 1836 but no birth of Henry, Thomas or Roseanne in any year or in any county!!

The marriage record would have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names to help you work back further but it costs to view the full record.

The only death record for Henry Fearon in Down is 1843 aged 76 so born 1767 which is too early so maybe he's a generation or two earlier.

I tried searching without the parents' names and got Henry FERAN born 1814 Down, Roseanne 1849 & there were 38 Thomases!

The variation in surname spelling was quite common due to transcription errors and illiteracy.

If you purchased the record you thought most likely to be correct you could search with the parents in that record (if they are on it) to see if you can find other siblings.

  • Dear Col,

Thank you for your help..  I did purchase the marriage cert. for Matthew & Ann from www.roots.ie.  Parents' names were not listed.  Witnesses were Redmond & Charles Magrath whom I searched  but without any sucess.  The Roseanne born in 1849 had different parents.  I guess I will try to contact the Tullylish parish directly.
