Can anyone help me find more detail of my two Great Gradfathers.

Thomas Byrne was born c 1824 and married on 1st August 1857 a girl called Mary Kelly at Kingston, Co. Dublin. They were both catholics. Mary was born c 1828. To date, I have been unable to find out any information about their parents, addresses both before and after the marriage.

Thomas and Mary had a daughter Mary E. Byrne born c1858 and a son, Thomas (My Grandad) born 1858/9. Both Thomas's were stonemasons. The family emigrated to Liverpool about 1860/1 where their next child John was born.

John Shirley/Sherley was born c 1826 and married on 28th. August 1853 a girl called Julia Doyle at Kingston, Co. Dublin. They were both catholics. Julia was born c 1829 and lived at Ballycoris. To date, I have been unable to find out any information about John's parents or where they and he lived both before and after the marriage.

John and Julia had sons Joseph Patrick born 1855/6 and John born1863/4 and daughters Catherine born 1858/9 and Mary (my grandmother) born 1860/1. John was a stonemason. The family emigrated to Liverpool between 1864 and 1867, where their son Thomas was born in 1866/7.

I have almost all the family details from then on but nothing further back than the births of Thomas and John.

                           If their are micofiches of the births, baptisms, marriages and deaths for the parish covering this area for the period from 1780 to 1860, I would be happy to help out with typing them on to a disc for both mine and others benefit.   Regards, Peter A. Burns.

  • Hello Peter,

    Civil registration only began in Ireland in 1864 so you will not find any birth certs for your ancestors.

    However the church baptismal and marriage records began a bit earlier.  In old cities and towns some records go back to 1790's or so but on the whole most parishes started keeping records from around 1820 .  You have been very lucky to trace back as far as you have considering the abscence of Irish records.

    There are two online sites that have a huge number (not all) of church records for the country. www.rootsireland.ie which can be searched and cross referenced before you have to pay to view a record.  No membership fees, it's pay per view, about €5 or so.

    The other site is www.irishgenealogy.ie a free site run by the government to take up the slack where the previous site finished.  They each cover different parts of the country so you will need to look carefully to ensure that you are searching the correct site.
