Hi, I'm trying to trace my irish family. I have a few details on my great grandad but would like to fill in the gaps if anyone could help me. So far I know:
Edward Edge
Born 1883
Married Elizabeth in 1909
They had 6 children: George, Annie, Danny, twin boys Robert and I'm not sure, then 2 others.

I know he was a sergeant in the army but I don't know what regiment due to the angle of the photo. He joined the Guinness factory in 1919 and worked in cooperage until I presume he retired and died in 1969. From their records I think I found him in rathmines and rathgar west in the 1911 census

I looked for a birth index record for Edward but could only find an 1881 record for an Edward born in Wicklow. (The 1911 census record indicates he was born in Dublin City). By the way, there were only 4 Edward Edge births recorded in all of Ireland(1869, 1871, 1881 and 1899) so the 1881 record may be him. I did find his civil marriage index record from 1909 (both are below). The marriage record would have the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living in 1909. If you want to get copies of either or both records from the GRO, let me know and I will explain the process. A copy costs around 4 euros.

  • Becky:

    Here are the instructions.

    Roger

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

long time passing but hope you are still online. On Facebook there is a place called Arthur Fields: Man on Bridge which I have liked as they post old photos taken on the street of Dublin, there has been a TV documentary on this man who arrived in Ireland in the 1930s and basically he worked on the bridge of the main street O'Connell Street, for 50 years he took photos of people and you could buy them later, he done very well too.

Anyway people started putting his photos up on FB and what they mean and I see today one has arrived with a Kathleen Edge in it, elegant lady too with two other people, just as the name is so unusual I thought you might want to look as I am sure some one is on Facebook. Photos are put up fairly often so you may have to scroll a bit and if you scroll a lot you will see baby me.

    Happy Christmas

  • If you are still researchung the Edge family, get in touch with me at mrrosshopkins@hotmail.com.

The Edges you are working on were probably connected with the large Edgw family od Co. Wicklow, from whom I descend.   i have a ton of stuff and can tell you that there is a huge Edge family history held in the library in Stafford UK   The Edge Papers.

  • Dear Pat,

Six months ago I posted a reply to Becky, informing her that I have so much material on the Edge family of Co. Wicklow.   It goes back centuries, but she never responded.

IF YOU OR ANYONE ELSE IS INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY THEY SHOULD GET IN TOUCH.

  • Hi Beccy

Just came across this and wondered how far you had got with this?  To fill in a few gaps... Grandfather Edward Edge... Children.. George, Eddie, Annie, Frances (F), Robert & John (twins). I thought my dad (Robert) had a brother called Tom (I assume Thomas) too, that would be 7 children but I may be wrong.

They lived in Mounpleasant Square, Ranelagh, S Dublin for many years.  When I went to the guiness factory some years ago I looked at their archives and had more information which unfortunately i lost on an old computer!

Would be interested to resurrect this project with you, especially as my son lives in Dublin and I visit quite frequently.
