I am trying to determine my grandmothers birth place

I have come across a record for Anne Connelly born 1887 her parents are Patrick and Mary Kelly 34 Gloucester Street in the Parish of St Andrew.

I have recently discovered Annie had a middle name Molly which only appears on her marriage Banns to William Wells but nowhere else afterwards.

I would apreciate any help given to establish her birth place.

Many thanks in advance

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I can't tell from your message whether you know that your Anne's parents were Patrick Connelly and Mary Kelly and that the parish was St. Andrews in Dublin or you found a record  that might be her. Can you clarify?

  • Hi Roger.

I have Annie's marriage cerificate. She married in the UK in 1913, South Wales. Her deceased father's name was Patrick.

Mary Kelly not sure at all.

I am trying to establish her roots as it was know by older family memers she was Irish, but nobody could say what part she came from.

I checked Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. I searched from 1886-1896 and there were 13 baptismal/birth records for an Ann Connelly (or variant spelling) with a father named Patrick. None showed a middle name Molly but middle names were not often shown. There would be additional records for Dublin city, part of Co. Cork and all of Co. Kerry on www.irishgenalogy.ie

Do you have Ann's death record which might show a year of birth?

  • Thank very much for your time and interest Roger.

Yes I do have a death certificate for her.

I have her first marriage certificate to Willian Wells and a second marriage certificate for Joseph Burton, it was only when I came across her banns for her first marriage that I came across Molly as her middle name which followed she called their daughter Molly.

On Her death certificate it records her age as 59 which would make her birth year:- 1889.

I looked at Roots Ireland for Ann Connelly records in 1889 with a father named Patrick. Only two records came up which are below. I would consider these records as leads.

  • Thank very much once again Roger.

The first lead is very interesting. Anne's first son, my father named his daughter Molly Catherine, possibly derived from Catherine from the her grandmother's name and molly from her mother's name.
I think the lead you have come up with is the best lead I have had.

Would you be able to suggest what steps I could take from here to confirm either one as my granmother.

  • Allen:

I assume you are not aware of any siblings that Anne had. If you have exhausted all records in Wales then the only alternative I would suggest is autosomal DNA testing. With DNA testing you may match with someone who has a more detailed history of the Connelly family.

  • Roger:

Anne had siblings from both her marriages.
Unfortunately none of the information I have gathered will take me backwards to her birth place. All the Documented information I have on her is from the time of her marriage to her death in 1948. There is no family member or friend alive that can pass any information on making the connection is really difficult.

Your suggestion of DNA might be the only option

  • Hi Roger.

I have found Annie Connelly on the 1939 Register, remarried to Joseph Burton. She has given her date of birth

    25th July 1890.

With this new information, please, would it be possible for you to help a little further.

    Regards Allen

I will have to defer searching until after Christmas. For some reason we are getting an unprecedented volume of messages. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
