Nathaniel Warren (1737-1796) was my 4th great grandfather.  He was an alderman and sheriff among his many titles.  He was married for the second time to Agnes Birmingham at St. Andrews Dublin City in 1773.  Among their children was Eleanor Warren (1780-1860, my 3rd great grandmother, who emigrated to the US in 1838 with her son Robert Crean (her husband Robert Crean died in 1831), and her two daughters, Henrietta and Georgina.  Henrietta Agnes Crean married James Gotdon Bennett who was the founder an publisher of the New York Herald and one of the wealthiest men in America.

I am seeking information on the parentage of Nathaniel Warren.  Two noted genealogists posit that his father was Oliver Warren who traces his ancestors to the Magna Carta Barons.  However, he died in years before Nathaniel was born.  Other sources have Nathaniel belonging to The Warren clan from Stillorgan.

Any information relating to Nathaniel Warren would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Owen

I am also a Warren descendent from Nathaniel Warren's first marriage to Catherine Higgins who died in 1773.  In the past week I have received some notes from the City Archives, but the information does not refer to his second marriage (to Agnes Bermingham in approx 17750).  Altogether it seems that he had 11 children.

My line is: Nathaniel Warren-James Taylor Warren (who died in India)- his son, also James Taylor Warren, who also died in India (both in the army)-his son James Green Warren-his eldest daughter Elizabeth Madeline Warren who was my grandfather's mother.  Madeline died aged 44 years in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.  My grandfather aged 12 when his father died was sent to South Australia to be brought up initially by his grandmother Eliza Warren (James Green Warren's wife) and after she died in 1916, he lived with his 2 unmarried aunts until he himself married.  I am the second child of his eldest daughter.

    Perhaps we could compare notes

Sorry for the delay in replying.  I have not been able to verify Nathaniel Warren's second marriage with primary sources.  However, two noted genealogists have written about it, although unsourced.  John O'Hart in the "Irish and Anglo Irish Landed Gentry" and Henry Browning in "Americans of Royal Descent" both indicate that his daughter by this second marriage, Eleanor (Warren) Crean emigrated to the US around 1838 with her two daughters, Henrietta Agnes and Georgina, and son, Richard Robert.  Henrietta married James Gordon Bennett who was the founder and publisher of the New York Herald.  He was extremely wealthy.  I am descended from Richard Robert.  Incidentally, both authors trace Nathaniel Warren's lineage to the Magna Carta Barons.  However, this claim has been disputed by several sources since both authors lack specfic documentation for their sources.  If you are not aware of these two authors, you should try to view copies online or from a library.

By the way, there is another treatment of the lineage of Nathaniel Warren that you can access on the internet:  Thomas Warren, "A history and genealogy of the Warren family".  He claims that Nathaniel Warren was not the son of Oliver Warren (Sir Peter Warren's brother) as had been claimed by O'Hart and Browning.  It is interesting reading with lots of data on the family of Nathaniel Warren.  Interestingly enough, Thomas Warren disputes the claim that Nathaniel was not the son of Oliver and therefore not descended from the Magna Carta Barons.  However, in his closing words he acknowledges the valuable assistance of Charles H. Browining whose works nevertheless attribute Nathaniel's lineage to the Barons.  Interesting!
