I am looking for Nowlan/Nolan in Fermanagh.  Patrick B. Nolan born 1809 married Mary __?__ and had 2 children in Ireland . Catherine born Jan 6 1935 in Kellisher and James born in 1839.  They came to the US and had 7 more children.  They were farmers in McHenry County Illinois.  There are several other Nolan families in McHenry. There are several Nolan’s in Aghalurcher, Kellisher and Derryvullen that might be part of this family line. Any recommendations on next steps would be greatly appreciated.

  • hi Terry,

Unfortunately there are no Birth, Marriage, Death records that go back that far in Ireland.

Official records for Catholics began in 1864, for non-Catholics they began earlier 1846 I think.

You ca use the search engine at www.familysearch.com to see what US records they have on file.

This could be your Patrick in the 1880 Census, living with sons James and Thomas.

There is a John NOLAN living in Drumgague Townland  in Killesher Parish in 1858-1860, people never usually travelled very far looking for spouses in those days, so your James could be a relative of this John.

Unfortunately the NOLANs are no longer in the same Townland by 1901.

There is a search facility here...

You could also join the Fermanagh-Gold list and see if anyone is researching the same family.

  • Hi Sean,

Thanks so much for your kind reply.  My Patrick died in 1868.  There were multiple Patrick Nolan's almost all with sons named James that settled in McHenry county.  This is actually my family in 1880. The # after the name indicates that this is the last census they appear on due to death. Patrick was my great grandfather and Thomas was my grandfather. The family owned the farm from 1845 until 1942. I've periodically looked at the Fermanagh Gold site but have never posted there.  I may try that next.
