I am trying to find information on the history the Ovens family and it's involvement with some of the Churches in Fermanagh. The Ovens family seems to have a history of involvement with several of the churches several Ovens serving as rector. In particular a Rev William Ovens (1752-1821) Served as rector of Boho Church and seems to have been acting as an Agent to the Earl of Ely (Ely documents 1794-1801 communications between Hugh Montgomery and rev William Ovens).

The Ovens family is documented as having leased several 100s of acres in and arround the area of Tully Castle/Castle Hume, Church Hill & Street/Saint Catherines to name some of the more frequently occuring locations all along the western bank of the Lower Lough Erne. To this day the family is involved with Slavin Church in the area.

I am hoping someone out there can point me in the direction of some good documentation on the local history. As near as I can figure the Ovens family came from Scotland to this Area some time after the 1641 attack on Tully Castle. I have some documentation of a fair amount of Ovens families in the southern boarder areas of Scotland where the Tully family came from prior to having the castle built in this Area of Ireland. I am wondering if there was perhaps a migration of an entire parish from Scotland to Ireland that i can link the Ovens' family move to.

  • Hi Kyle

I'm wondering if you are aware of the Representative Church Body Library (RCBL) in Dublin?

It holds records of service of employees in C of I churches

  • Thank you, I was not aware of RCBL. Unfortunately it appears that they do not have any records online, I'll most likely not hav an oppertunity to visit any time soon. I'll explore this potential resource as soon as I have an oppertunity, that you for the lead!

  • I am not sure if you are still interested, but my Fausset family are related as his sister married my GGGGrandfather.  I have always understood that the Ovens came with King Billy's Dutch regiments and some stayed.

The gentleman in question had quite a sway in the church

If you haven't already done so join new Fermanagh Gold which is for researches of Fermanagh families and very helpful
