Hello!

I am looking for information on James Bell born about 1770, married Elizabeth Johnston born 23 Feb 1773, she later immigrated to Canada and died in 1867. My direct ancestor is their son Walter born in Fermanagh 1828, I am looking for any information on siblings, marriage dates, etc, thank you

  • Stephanie,

If the dates you have given are accurate, Elizabeth would have been 55 when she gave birth to Walter in 1828. That’s just about possible but would be unusual. Most women ceased being fertile in their 40s in those times.

You don’t say what denomination the family were but I’ll guess Church of Ireland. There are 4 churches in that parish. The only one with records covering part of the period you are interested in is Derryvullan North. It’s records start in 1803. There’s a copy of them in PRONI, the public record office, in Belfast.

Part of the 1821 census for Derryvullan survives. I searched it for your Bell family but did not find them.

There’s quite a lot of Johnston(e) households in the 1821 Derryvullan census. A common name in the area.
