  • Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864 (as opposed to 1837 in England). So if John was born before 1864, you need to rely on church baptism records. Do you know what denomination he was? (Looking at the 1901 census for Fermanagh most McAfees were either RC or Church of Ireland).

I looked in the statutory records for around 1864/65 and did not see a birth so that does suggest it was pre 1864.

If he was RC, then the baptism records are on the NLI site:

    http://registers.nli.ie/parishes

If he was Church of Ireland (ie Anglican) then their records start in 1861. They are not on-line and the only copy is held by the church in Enniskillen, so you would need to write to the Rector/Vicar, and there may be a fee to get the information.

  • Thank you, I have seen the John McCaffrey but not sure if it is the right one, I have also found a marriage for John McCaffrey & Mary Barrett. I have 3 English census for him with 3 different Birth dates - 1863, 1864, 1865 but according to when he joined the Straffordshire Police he was born 1862.

I am guessing he was Church of Ireland as he didn't get married in a Roman Catholic church.

  • Sounds to me as though you need to write to the Church in Enniskillen to see if they have a baotism for him 1861- 1863.

  • Looking for info on Joh Frederick McAfee, Sr. born 10/Feb/1812, in Belfast, Antrim, Northern Ireland. He had a younger brother, George. Also wore a black hat which indicates he was the oldest child. 1828 he immigrated to Canada. Later after marrying and having 11 children. He moved on to Michigan where he passed in 1905.
