John Monaghan was born in Tempo, Co. Fermanagh in 1838. According to family lore, his father Michael was one of 6 brothers that were school teachers in the Belturbet area. Reportedly the Monaghan family originated from Scotland where they were Protestants & moved to Ireland where they converted to Catholicism.
I think I've found Michael in 1829 at a school in or near to the Killyraw townland as a witnedd for the defence in a court case.
With 5 brothers there must be a few more Monaghan decendants out there so I would love to hear from anyone with early 19th Century Monaghan ancestry connections to the Tempo/Enniskillen/Belturbet area.

I am also researching John and Michael Monaghan because we have the same family lore of 6 brothers who were teachers, with Monaghan surname living in Belturbet in around 1850's. I have heard the same story of the protestants living in Scotland and that these protestants were Huguenots who fled from France.

My great grandfather John W Monaghan was born 17 Sept 1842 in Fermanagh, I'm uncertain of where. By 1861 he had moved to Carlisle England and from there to Fall River, Massachusetts. His marriage record said his father's name was JamesIbut other than that know nothing of his parents or siblings. His sons were named John, James, Francis, David and Thomas.
