I am trying to find the areas my ancestors lived, I do have a good amount of information from Australia but now am seeking, to locate the actual streets and or county where they lived.                                                                                                          Edward Donnelly B 1822 Lugan Amagh & Jan Quinn B 1828 Lugan Armagh both arrived in Australia 22 Apr 1856 onboard vessel "Maitland" along with 2 of their children Catherine and Jane.

Five more families to trace later.

Thanks Patricia

  • Patricia,

The town where Edward and his wife originated seems likely to be Lurgan. It’s in Co. Armagh. RC parish of Shankill. Their baptism records start in 1822. The RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

    http://registers.nli.ie/parishes

I do see a Jane Quinn in those records, baptised 22.4.1827 to parents James Quinn & Rose Low. I also see a baptism for Gean Donnelly to Edward Donnelly & Jane Quinn on 24th Sept 1854. They lived in the townland of Doher. Gean/Jean & Jane are interchangeable names in Ireland (and Scotland). So I’d say that’s your family. Doher is likely to be an alternative spelling for Dougher and is 176 acres in size. It was agricultural land in the 1850s but is now housing estates for the suburbs of Lurgan. Lake St runs through the middle of it.

  • Elwyn, Thanks so much the information re: Quinn family matches my information, now thanks to you I have the township, I am thinking when next I visit Irland I Shall have to settle to having a wander in the general area of my ancestors and this will do just fine.

With the Donnelly connection did not find Edward but again I now have the Diocese and Parish of Shankill.

More questions coming your way until then

    Regards and appreciation Patricia
