Looking for information on my ancestors. My 3rd Great Grandfather was Philip Martin and his father was Terence Martin mother Bridget McTiernan or Tiernan. Per Philip's Kansas Obit, he was a gardner at Castle Coole. It is estimated that he was born around 1831/1832. They immigrated to Canada. I had also found a record that they may have been from Lisnaskea, Derrylin, Fermangh. His siblings born in Ireland were James, Patrick and Bridget.

I wasn't able to find a baptism record for Philip Martin but rootsireland.ie does show a baptism for a Patrick Martin born to a father Terence Martin and a mother first name Bridget (last name not recorded) in the parish of Booterstown/Blackrock Dublin in 1822. I couldn't see a marriage record for Terence and Bridget. Other children include: Anne & James, 1819; Patrick (above); John, 1815 and Laurence, 1813.

There is also a baptism record for a Terence in the same parish in Jan 1785, obviously the Terence above. His parents were recorded as William Martin and Ann (surname not recorded).

Can I ask why you think Philip was born/baptised in Fermanagh. Could the above family be your ancestors, there are some similarities?

I see that that were still Martin listings in Caste Coole in the 1901 Census, I wonder if some are related?

Let me know what you think

  • Thank you Clare! Philip's obit mentioned Fermanagh and various other records we have point that is where the family originated from. It has been sometime since I have reviewed my collection of artifacts, but I do believe there was an Ann. Also, Terence and Bridget had a son named Constantine. I think there were a total of 8 children. The Martin's in 1901 at Castle Coole, have a high probability of being related. I have a story I found about an Earl of Castle Coole in the 1700's being indebted to a Sarah Martin, she may be connected also. I think Terence had a brother named Bernard. It shows on a Catholic Marriage record that Constantine married his first cousin Catherine in which it shows Terence and Bernard as brothers.

  • I forgot to mention that there was a John Martin that died early on when the family first settled in Kansas. His reads 'Uncle John' and we believe him to be Philip's brother.
