  • You need to be aware of all variant spellings since record keepers would write down not only how they thought a name was spelt, but also, if he/she had trouble understanding what was said, what he thought the person had said. Religious denomination is also a major factor when researching in Ireland.

A good place to start would be Fermanagh Gold.

  • Michael Smith B 1820 came to the USA about 1840 and died of drowning in Galena. He was from County Fermanagh Ireland. His Wife no 1 was Mary Mechan maybe. Iwould like to know about his family in Ireland.

  • This is my great-great grandfather. I have not been able to find any information about his Fermanagh years. Believe his wife was Mary Mohan. How is he related to you?

  • I tried this yesterday , but it didn't work. Michael Smith is myG G grandfather. One of his sons was William Henry Smith. William Smith was my Grandfathers' father. William is buried in Hadam Kansas.

    How are you related?

    yours Tom Smith

  • Tom,

This is confusing, as William Henry was my grandfather's father, and is buried in Galena, Illinois, where he died in 1932. Michael Smith is also buried in Galena, dying in 1892. My grandfather was Reginald Smith.

  • Tom,

I should have added that I have complete obituaries for both. Do you know where in Fermanagh Michael Smith lived?
