My husband's family said that they and the following family were cousins, but I don't know how, don't know who the common ancestor was -

John King and Honor Shaughnessy of Feagh had at least the following children:

Margaret - born 1872, died 1932 in New York (m. James Burke)

Michael - born 1873, died 1912 in New York (m. Margaret McCann)

Martin - born abt. 1886, died 1914 in New York

probably Bridget - born 1870

From oral family history, I know that my husband's grandfather, Thomas King, knew them in New York. In fact, it was to Michael and his family to whom he went when he arrived in the US.

They are contemporaries of my husband's grandfather who came to New York - Thomas King b. 1873 in Feagh.

?

I’ve been pursuing my husband’s family in Ireland for about 20 years. I believe I have almost all the available Irish and US Censuses, vital records, ship passenger lists, etc. (including the Abbeyknockmoy microfilmed records).

My husband’s maternal grandfather was Thomas King from Feagh/Feagh West, born 1873.

His siblings were:

Patrick, born 1869

Martin, born 1870

Catherine, born 1875

Mary, born 1881

Short versions of what I know about these siblings -

Thomas and his brother, Patrick, went to Lancashire, England, in the late 1880/early 1890s (they appear on the 1891 Census there). Thomas married Bridget Dempsey there, originally form County Offaly, had two children in England, one of whom died there, and moved to New York, in Manhattan, in the early 1900s where they had seven more children, one of whom died as a child. My husband’s mother and her six siblings lived in Manhattan and eventually moved to Brooklyn, New York.

Patrick married Martha Dooley in Lancashire, had three children there, then moved back to County Galway where they had at least three more children. Martin, Ellen, Norah, Bridget, William and Mary.

Martin married Moira Higgins from Clotherboy and had a son Martin there in 1899. Eventually they lived first in New York, in Manhattan, and then moved to Hoboken, New Jersey. Besides Martin, they had eight other children of whom I’m aware - Thomas, Delia, Mary, Stephen (died as a child), Patrick, William, Norah, Peter.

Mary remained in Ireland and married Daniel Collins in 1904. From the 1911 Census, their two children at that time were Michael and Bridie. I believe they had about eight more children.

My husband’s maternal grandfather and his siblings’ parents were Thomas King, born 1843 in the parish of Abbeyknockmoy, and Bridget Glynn, born somewhere in County Galway. Nothing else on her and her parents has been found. No marriage registration has been found for Thomas King and Bridget Glynn. Thomas King b 1843 should have died between the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, and Bridget Glynn King should have died after the 1911 Census.

I believe that the 1843 Thomas King’s parents were Thomas King and Mary Keane, and that he had siblings Bid, born 1839, and Martin, born 1841. No marriage registration has been found for Thomas King and Bridget Glynn.

Surnames for sponsors used were Ford, Kean, King, Hession, Glynn and Roche.

?

Perhaps some of the above will be familiar to someone! Many thanks to all who read this.

I looked at your note and did some searching but for the most part came up empty-handed. You did not mention the Griffiths survey from 1856 so I listed below the Kings shown for Abbeyknockmore parish.

I looked at www.familysearch.org and found some additional children for John King and Honor Shaughnessy. I understand that they are not your husband's direct line but I thought I would pass on the info. The additional children were: Mary 1/10/1866, Pat 10/17/1867, Bridget 10/14/1870 (you had the year) and Honor 9/2/1876. Good luck!

  • hi,

re: Surnames for sponsors used were Ford, Kean, King, Hession, Glynn and Roche

My family are the ROCHEs from Feagh, and I have been researching the family.

Who was the ROCHE sponsor you mentioned - were they sponsors in Galway or USA ??

I have a grandmother WILLIAMS from Feagh, a g-grandmother KIGGINS from Feagh, and a g-g-grandmother HESSION from Feagh.

There was a Peter ROCHE b.1823 in Feagh who is probably related somehow, he married Mary SHAUGHNESSY and they had four children between 1862-1870.

The ROCHE family are still in Feagh, and I have a cousin that married a Tom KEANE.

I am not aware of any KING connection, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply!

I wasn't sure about the Kings not born in Feagh West so I didn't list them. I guess time will tell.

I had looked into Griffith's and extended Griffith's but no new information was found.

    Good Luck with your research,

  • All the sponsors I referred to were in Irealnd, Sean.

For my husband's grandfather's generation (1870s) only one registration in the Abbeyknockmoy film had sponsors - William Glynn and Bridget Roche.

For his g-grandfather's generation (1840s), all three registrations I found had sponsors:

    John Ford

    John King and Nelly Hession

    Martin Ford and Bid Kean

Since my husband's grandfather died before Tom was born, it was Tom's late mother who gave me tidbits of information and not much had to do with her father's life in Ireland or England where he went before coming to the US.  She never mentioned any of the surnames used for sponsors.

    Thanks for exploring possibilities!

    Regards,

    Helen

  • hi,

My g-grandfather had a sister Bridget b. 28 JAN 1849 which would fit, that would normally indicate a family connection I would have thought.

I will see if I can find anything else about her.

  • hi,

I would check out the following thread if I was you.

    http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-tipperary/messages/mullen-and-kin…

This guy has MULLINS and KING ancestors from Feagh.

I have MULLINS connections, and a cousin of mine is related to this guy as well.

    Good luck.
