I recently came upon a test book record from Emigrant Savings Bank for my 3x great grandfather Hugh Tully and his wife Margaret Cosgrove. The identifying information lists his as "native to Cloontuskert Co. Galway" which I took to be Clontuskert. He arrived in New York in June of 1849 on a ship named Enterprise. It lists his father Pat dead, and mother in Ireland Cath Farrell. 1 brother Martin.

My family had told me Hugh's mother's name was Nancy Duffy and his death certificat list his father as Patrick and mother as Mary (with no maiden name given.) It makes it all pretty confusing! I found the record for High's arival in America, and there were no other family members with him.

I am "reaching out" to Ireland Reaching Out to see if I can get any more information on Hugh Tull, his parents, or his brother Martin.

Thank you for any help or direction in advance, Jen

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The records for Clontuskert RC parish in Co. Galway go back to 1827. Roots Ireland has the parish records but indicates that some records are missing. When I did a search for Hugh Tully baptismal records with father Patrick in Co. Galway, I got no record. There is a Martin Tully baptismal record in Ballinasloe in 1852 with father Patrick and Mother Mary Salmon. I assume this reocrd is too late for your Martin Tully.

We do have a parish liaison in Clontuskert and I will alert her to your message.

  • Thank you. I am hoping she may have some insight. I ran in to similar problems as you have!

    Jen,

That Emigrant Savings Bank book may have been referring just to Margaret.  I don't recall exactly, but further studies of mine - and a DNA match with a John Keith Tully have added a Hugh to the family.  Hugh may be from Cavan with my John and his Owen.         Robin
