Hello,

My great grandfather James Patrick Madden was born in Clontuskert Parish in November 1861 to Darby Madden and Catharine Williams. I have James' baptism record as well as Darby and Catharine's marriage record. I also know Darby's sister Bridget married Thomas Colohan. I have their marriage and children's baptisms as well as some death certificates. I've had my DNA tested have a confirmed connection through Bridget Madden and Thomas Colohan.

I'm looking to find Darby and Catharine's respective parents. There was a Darby b. 1832 to Laurence and Ellen Holleran (sp?). But this was in Tynagh a significance distance away and I cannot connect them to Clontuskert. I found Catharine as a witness to the marriage of Edward Tracey and Mary Bohan in 1860. But there is little if any info on the Williams family in Clontuskert Parish. I found a Catharine Williams b. 1832 to Leonard and Maria Conry. But this was in Woodford which again is a lengthy distance from Clontuskert Parish.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Lynn Smilow

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We have a parish liaison in Clontuskert civil parish. I will send her an e-mail alerting her to your message. As an aside, the Darby in Tynagh is not all that far from Clontuskert so I will keep that record as a lead.

  • UPDATE: I have finally received the death record of Darby Madden in NJ and his parents are listed as James Madden and Mary Murray. I have found 1 brother William's baptism register but no other siblings or Darby. So Laurence and Ellen are no longer part of my search.

  • Hi Lynn,

Sorry for coming to this post late.

My name is Emma O'Reilly, my mum is Evelyn Colohan from Ahascragh.  The reason I'm replying to your post is because the births of my mums aunts and uncles were registered in Clontuskert.

I was wondering if you would mind sharing your DNA number?  Is your kit in Gedmatch?  I'd love to identify if there is a connection between your Colohans and mine.

    Many thanks,
    Emma.

  • Good morning Emma,

I have not tracked all of the Colohans but the one I did was John Colohan (b. 1863,  m. 1899 to Louisa Carry). They lived primarily in Ballymanagh/Ganaveen/Lismany. His parents were Thomas Colohan and Bridget Madden (sister to my 2GGF). Siblings included James (d. 1917 Newark, NJ), Mary and Ellen.  The best GEDMatch number to try is A989118. Let me know if you see a match. If there is one it may be far back. I'd be happy to work with you on family info if there is!

    Kind regards,

    Lynn

  • To Lynn

I have been researching my family.  I am a direct descendant of Thomas Colahan and Bridget Madden.

Their daughter Mary Colohan married Christopher Bulger in New Jersey in 1889 and their daughter Cecelia Bulger Meehan was my grandmother.  She died  in 1918, shortly after giving birth to my father Christopher Meehan

thank you for posting the information on the family.   I was unsure of Mary's siblings.  The records I found  indicated four children, Mary 1860, John 1863, Ellen 1867 and  James in 1858.

I show marraige of Thomas and Bridget as 22 Jul 1855 in Clontuskert. I only have records I have found online.

My question is if you know the birthdates of Thomas and Bridget.   and what death certificate information you may have.

There are a couple of Colohan genealogy charts I found online which I feel are not accurate, so appreciate finding you.

I have not done my dna as I thought it needed to be done through a male when researching my father's line.

    thanks,

    Kathy Meehan Anderson

    Good morning Kathy and Jo!

Kathy - I have a recent DNA match to your family through the Soleckis. Jo and I are also confirmed cousins through DNA. I have sent records to Pete but would also be happy to share them with you. I'd prefer to do that through email rather than posting here. Just email me. lynnsmilow@gmail.com. But I will show you a picture of Bridget Madden Colohan's brother Darby.

Jo - will catch up soon! Hope all is well.

  • I am thrilled to make contact with relatives of Bridget Madden and Thomas Colohan.   Thank you Lynn and Jo for responding. with information and for the records you have sent me, Lynn.

I was looking mainly in Clontuskert for birth records of Bridget and Thomas, and found several options, but no Bridget/Brigida daughter of James Madden and Mary Murray.  and not sure of Thomas's parents.

I have spent a couple months searching  and would so appreciate birth dates and locations for Bridget and Thomas. and death dates and location for them.

    To Jo Capon,

did you create a family tree on My Heritage  that mentions several Colohans, Maddens, Keoghs, McEvoys. and Williams.??? (Ellen married a McEvoy)    It was linked as a possible match to my family tree, but  Bridget Madden Colohan was not listed there, though there are names that may be in her and Thomas Colohans family.    the info provided me does not list who is the husband and wife, but lists only the relatives and their connection to them.

There was also a family tree managed by a Joseph Colohan who listed Bridget as Bridget Tierny Madden and included the children of Thomas Colohan and Bridget Tierny as sibling of John, James, Ellen, and Mary.

Is there a relationship of Honoria, Catherine, Michael, Bridget, Ann, and Martin who are shown to be children of Thomas Colohan and Bridget Tierney, who were married in 1873??

Thank you for clarifying this for me.

    Sincerely,

    Kathy Meehan Anderson

  • Kathy,

In the marriage of Thomas Colohan and Bridget Tierney, their fathers are listed as John and Thomas, respectively. Both fathers were alive at the time of this 1871 marriage. The Tierney children were born in Caltraghlea. Our Colohan children through Thomas and Bridget Madden (James, Mary, John and Ellen) were born between 1858-1867. Their son John did have a son Thomas but he was born in 1900.

BTW, the attached article regarding the townlands of Clontuskert is quite an interesting read.

  • HI. lynn

thanks for your response.  When I started research I found the birth records of the 4 children of Thomas and Bridget, and their marriage information   and then

Myheritage cofused me when it showed discoveries  from 4 family trees from Great Britain and Ireland that combined the children of Thomas and Bridget Madden  and Thomas and Bridget Tierney,  so I spent much time researching each child listed, and rejected the latter's children.    Included at myheritage  was  a family tree managed by J. Capon.

so wondering if they were different families, but somehow related.

thank you for the article on Clontuskert.   I so hope my sibling will be able to visit Ireland in a year and spend more time in this area.

    Take care,

    Kathy

  • Lynn, I re-ran a DNA comparison between yourself and mum and removed the 7cM default. We actually have a match. It's small so the link is quite far back.

My g-g-grandfather John Colohan married Honora Kennedy c. 1825 - he is as far back as i've been able to go although I suspect he had a brother Edward and perhaps another brother Patrick looking at names of godparents of some of John and Honora's children.

John was born in 1801. The family home is 16kms from Clontuskert. I don't know if John was born there, but I doubt that it's coincidence that there were Kennedy's living barely two minutes away in the same townland. I've never been able to confirm that it was the same line though.

Would love to connect with you on this. Do you have any of your Colohan info in an online tree? Happy to share mine if it's of help to you.

  • Hi. I believe I have a photo of James Patrick from the  Spanish American war. You may already have it. Catharine's parents could be William and Catherine.  Let me know if you don't have that photo, and I will shoot it to you

  • @Murph11 - Thank you. My great grandfather is James Patrick and I do have his photo from the SA war. I believe his mother Catherine Williams was the daughter of William Williams and Catherine Farrell, who married in Co. Meath but settled in Co. Offaly (Kings) before coming to Co. Galway. I'm related to the Colahans through Bridget Madden Colahan, sister to James Patrick's father Darby.

Curious as to which Madden/Colahan line you come through...

  • I'm probably not related to you, but my Murphy family lived in Clifden and near Omey Island in the 1800s. This popped up and I thought I'd try to help investigate for you. I've done several genealogies and though not an expert understand what a joy it is to connect with your past. That photo of James Patrick was cool looking, so I wanted to make sure you had it.
