Hi...

I noticed that Thomas Ormsby was a stone mason that worked at a large limestone quarry in Ballinasloe.  Joseph Ormsby was listed as one of the repealers (Galway, Freeman's journal, 10Oct1840).  I think that it might be possible that they are brothers?  They relocated to Philadelphia, PA, USA in the late 1840's.  Joseph Ormsby was born around 1805 (married in 1828 in Castlebar.. probably married in the wife's home Church)..  Thomas Ormsby was born around 1815 (married Margaret Neary)..

I am hoping that their home Church was close to where they worked.

Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.

You don't mention the religious denomination but I will assume RC. RC Church records for Ballinasloe start in 1820. The Clontuskert RC records start in 1827. I could not locate the marriage record for Thomas and Margaret and I also looked in Co. Roscommon.

I did search the Tithe records and found an 1824 record for a Matthew Ormsby in Dunlo townland in Kilcloony civil parish. Not sure if he is connected to Thomas and/or Joseph.

  • Hello Roger..

Thank you for researching your records.  Thomas's first born son is Matthew John Ormsby (born in Philadelphia, PA, USA).  Finding Matthew Ormsby on the 1824 tithe record yields another clue for us.  Hopefully, Thomas named his first born after his father.  Thank you for wonderful information.
