I am trying to find any Irish records relating to my great, great grandma Margaret Morgan, born around 1840. In the 1921 English census she gave her birthplace as "Parish of Dunmore, Galway"  Whether this is a church or civil Parish I don't know. She was the daughter of Michael and Ann, or Hannah, Morgan both born around 1820 in Galway. Her siblings were Sabina, born around 1843 and Patrick born 1846.

They left for England sometime around 1850, settling in Leeds Yorkshire. Her maiden name is sometimes recorded as Mochan or Monaghan.

She then married Michael Haney, also from Galway but no other details. His family went to Leeds in the 1840s where they are recorded as Haney, although his marriage certificate named him Haley. Its all very confusing! His family are as follows :

Patrick born around 1805  Mary around 1834, Patrick junior around 1836, Michael around 1838 and John born about 1842.

My second visit to Galway will be in 2 weeks time and I will go to Dunmore anyway, but any further information would be appreciated. Its taken about 20 years to get this far, there's not really much family left.

Thank you so much.

Dunmore is a civil parish and also an RC parish (different borders) in northern Co. Galway near the Mayo border. I presume your Morgans were Roman Catholic? Even though the Dunmore RC records start in 1833 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1061  I was unable to find baptismal records for any of the Morgan children using Michael as the father's name. Possibly they were members of Milltown parish just to the west of Dunmore and the Milltown records start in 1858 which could explain not finding a record.

You may want to consider DNA testing. Possibly you will have close matches on either your Morgan or Haney lines.

  • My Morgans were RC and I haven't found anything recording their baptisms either, so perhaps you are right. I will certainly take a look around Milltown when I am over.

I have done a DNA test, Ancestry narrowed me down to East Galway /Roscommon and I haven't had any close matches. Have recently uploaded to Gedcom so will check into that further.

Many thanks for your help Roger, I will carry on searching

  • Hi Roger, thanks for the tip, I am not on Facebook but will use my husband's account. I joined the Dunmore group last night, I hope, am just awaiting a reply.

You mentioned Milltown in a previous message, looking at the map there are 2, so, just to make sure you do mean the one near the N17? Don't want to visit the wrong place!
