Many thanks for the information Patrick, very useful. As an aside, I would like to look up some old newspaper obits that are not on line. I presume Gort and Galway will both have main newspaper offices that may have a paper archive? We will be visiting in May.

Prior to your visit you have a couple of options. The library service normally has online access to newspaper archives  and a suitably worded email may elicit the required information from a cooperative library assistant. Locate the area from the link below.

Alternatively there is an online archive you may not be aware of details below. You may be redirected to an alternate site as there is a sister site for those in the US. If you like the FB page you will receive notifications and it is not unknown for the site to offer free access for a couple of days. The last was back in May 2015.

It should be noted that obituaries were not necessarily run of the mill as they are today or part of the process of notification and were more often an indication of status and wealth to have an obituary published in Ireland a 100 or so years ago.
