Hi All,

Where did the origins of the  name gortnamonagh come from? Are the Kelly's in Derrybrien and Gortnamonagh of  the same family?

Thanks

  • Hi there,

I found this link that explains about place names: http://places.galwaylibrary.ie/asp/searchresults.asp It looks as though the name generally means 'Field of the Bog'. Hope that helps!

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Hi

Gortnamonagh is from Gort na Monach or field of the monks. Apparently there were monks based there at one time who farmed the land.
