I may be in the wrong parish, but I am trying to chase down a Mary and Thomas Lohan from Lisquell near Newbridge who gave birth to a Bridget Lohan around 1860 (maybe Mary was nee Hynes). Does anyone know what was going on in Lisquell at the time of Griffiths? According to the tenancy documents and maps there seems to be two extremely densly populated villages; 'Upper and Lower' each containing 25+ small holdings, littered with Lohans and Hynes' amongst other families. These two villages seem to stand out as different to other townlands at the time, were these farm labourers cottages working within an estate maybe? It feels as though I am now looking for a tree in a forest of Lohans here. Any suggestions welcome thanks - John O'Connor

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

I assume you want Liscuill townland in Killian civil parish which is just to the east of Killeroran. (I was not able to locate a Lisquell townland). We do not have a parish liaison in Killian parish but I will contact a parish liaison in a nearby parish.

Let me know if you have not heard back in ten days or so.

  • I am just realising what an impossible task locating a specific Lohan is going to prove in this part of the world, mid 1800s.

In Lisscuill alone there are 12 Lohan households, In neighbouring Lissavruggy village there are 24 and nearby Kilclough and Moneen villages have another 12. That makes 48 Lohan households in just those 4 villages alone and seemingly half of them headed by a Thomas. I fear the trail must end here with my ancestors hidden in plain sight.

PS. How was it possible that the land surrounding these hamlets could sustain such dense populations even post an Gorta Mor?

  • Hi John O.

Yes, there are lots of Lohan's, but if you're sure your Lohan's were Thomas and wife Mary Hyans/Hynes, they married on 3 Feb 1866 in the Parish of KILLERORAN, and had Patrick (Loughan) in Mar 1865, Bridget (Loughan) in May 1867, and Luke (Loughan) in Aug 1868, all born in Liscuill East, Killeroran Parish.

Is Bridget your ancestor? If so, what other info do you have on her, so we can be sure we have the right Lohan family?

    Regards, Colette

  • Hello John O

Lisquell is the current spelling of the townland spelt as Liscuill in Griffiths Valuation. At that time it was very densely populated and it appears that the land (640 acres ) was not subdivided but operated on the rundale system.

I suggest using the website irishgenaelogy.ie to checkfor births say from 1864 to 1870 or later and parents Thomas Lohan and Mary Hynes. There are 27 Lohan births listed 1864-1870

The parents of Luke Loughan (another version of Lohan)  born August 1868were Michael Lohan and Mary Hynes.

    The District is Mountbellew

Lisquell is about midway between Ballygar and Newbridge in County Galway

  • By now you have located Lisquill. You can find a reference to that townland at the following address, in the minutes of the Galway County Council minutes, february 18, 1966. My attention was more drawn to the items on sheep dipping, a practice that sounds intriguing, and of course quite unrelated to your search.

  • Thanks Collette and Michael,

I am indebted to you for introducing the term 'Rundale' which I had not come across. I have just gone on a quick 'google' crash-course, which has been very revealing and enlightening. Thank you, I will study this in greater depth. It seems pivotal to the understanding of the socio-political history of the times and now the Griffith's entry of Liscuill makes beautiful and graphic sense. The map reference in particular perfectly exemplifies a classic Rundale layout and the register of tenants reveal the 'clan' based nature of the system.

One of the pleasures of exploring personal family history is that it sometimes brings insights and understanding of the broader historical picture.

Bridget Lohan was my mother's mother's mother; my great grand mother. She married John Dooley in 1882, we believe she was 22 and he 50( which puts her d.o.b at 1860ish). She was his second wife, he had 6 children by the first and embarked on another 6 by Bridget. He was a 'Bonesetter' and herbalist living in Cornadrum, Killeroran. We know that Bridget came from Newbridge and that her father was Thomas Lohan and her mother Mary (Hynes has been mentioned but I wouldn't stand on one leg about that, though there does seem a lot of them in Liscuill). My mother places Bridget's family background around the Newbridge/Lisquell area.

That, I am afraid, is as far as it goes so far.

  • Hello again John O

As your Bridget was born about 1860 (I see her & John Dooley on the censuses), she can't be the daughter of Thomas Lohan and Mary Hyans/Hynes, who only married in 1866.

Do you know of any siblings of Bridget's? Failing being able to track Bridget, perhaps we can track a sibling?

If you are on Facebook you can post your query on the Ballygar & Area genealogy group :
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/159052454609634/

There are several who have connections to Lisquell there and some who have Lohan DNA which may match with your Lohans

  • Thank you Colette and Martin,

I will chase up possible names of siblings. Thanks for the link Martin, we haven't done any DNA tests yet but, as the trail seems to be cooling on all fronts, we should at least submit one. My mother is in her 90's and I am wondering if I could persuade her to go for it. Have you any particular recommendations for Irish ancestry?

  • I'm descended from the Lissavruggy Lohans, and suggest you test on FTDNA and then upload to GEDmatch for free. Also, there's a Ballygar and Area DNA Facebook group that's very active.

  • Thank you Diane I will follow that up.

Thank you also to Collettte. Your suggestion to take a side step and look for a sibling was inspired and has paid great dividends. My mother recalled that a sister of her grandmother had married a Mr Carr from Castleffrench and I found their marriage record. Thomas Carr married an Eleanor Lohan. Her parents are down as Thomas Lohan and Mary 'Gordon' and the witnesses are Peter and Mary Gordon (parents maybe?). The house is situated in 'Newtown', Killeroran, so I am now wondering if Newtown and Newbridge are being muddled up somewhere (though my mother says no). Two futher things; In Griffiths, there is a Peter Gordon down as one of the occupants of Newtown homeland and best of all I zoomed forward to the 1901 Census to the Carr household. There living in amongst the Carrs were, not only my gg grandparents, Thomas and Mary Lohan but also my grandmother Maria Lohan, who had obviously moved in with her grandparents. Sadly Eleanor had died by then. I will try to make sense of all this, it is hard to know whether the Lohans moved in with the Carrs or the other way round, but it is now beginning to look like the property may have come down through my new ancestors, the Gordons. Thanks once again for helping to unblock the pipes.

  • Thanks Colette for all that info,

I had been trying to follow this side of the family tree using personal handed down histories, some of which were misleading. They suggested that my great grandmother Bridget Lohan had moved to Cornadrum from one of the Lohan clans to the east around Newbridge to marry my great grandfather John Dooley. However these documents show that, just after her birth, her mother and father had lived practically next door in Cornananta/Castleffrench and were local neighbours. The Newbridge connection may have been back a generation or two. Another anecdotal story was that my Grandmother Maria Dooley had been brought up by an unrelated family (the Carrs?). We now know she was living at her grandparents house and was brought up by a combination of her grandparents, the Carr family and an Aunt; Kate Lohan, (who was disabled). In the 1901 Census, Maria managed to get herself enumerated twice; in both her parent's house in Cornadrum and her grandparent's house in Castleffrench, so maybe she commuted between the two.

    Thanks once again.

  • John, another suggestion for doing a DNA test, especially with a site that uses a chromosome browser like FTDNA or MyHeritage. I've made a number of Lohan matches there (my Lohans from Lissavruggy, but undoubtedly all related at some point).

  • John

The best option to make connections in the area is through Ancestry - we have dozens of people who have tested with Ancestry so that would get matches very quickly

In addition you can download your raw DNA data  and upload it for free in 3 other testing companise, Family Tree DNA, Myheritage and Living DNA

In the group you will also see people sharing a gedmatch number - that is from gedmatch.com where you upload your raw DNA data and can compare with people who have tested on the other sites

As your mother is the olest generation it would be best to test her

Once you join the group on Facebook I will introduce you to some of the Gordons, Lohans and other locals who will make more conenctions

  • Hi John,

    Fancy meeting you here...

I am beginning to put some pieces together.  As you know, my Larry matches your mother and also Noel Whyte.  I have connected the dots between your mother and Noel's famiy.  They share Matthew Gordon (1793-1873) and Ellen Conelly.  Since Larry's dna matches both Bridie and Noel I'm working on the assumption that Ellen Conelly may be his GGgrandfather's sister.  The dates would work and they were part of that Kilcuish eviction group.  It might be a long-shot, but I'm going to play with that premis for now.

Hope all is well with you...
