I have posted several messages to Ireland XO over the years since this web site started, looking for the townland in County Galway where my gggrandparents came from with no results. As I will never give up the search, I recently found some new information which I would like to pass on to anyone who might be able to help me, especially in this parish of Kilreekil.

The following is all I know for sure about my gggrandparents:

Denis Maloney and Margaret Murray, both from County Galway, had at least 2 children. Their son Peter 's death certificate confirns that Denis and Margaret were both from County Galway (but no townland). I don't have any information about Denis and Margaret's birth, marriage, or death.

They ahd at least 2 children:

Peter Maloney, born July 1, 1845 ( my ggrandfather) came to New York, NY about September 1862. I can't find a marriage record for him in either Ireland or Boston, where he settled and raised his 10 children with his wife Sarah Gleason ( not sure where Sarah is from in Ireland). Names of chidren are Denis Francis, Joseph H, Peter Joseph, Richard, Thomas Joseph, Mary Ann, Sarah Josephine ,Michael, William Gregory, Stephen Lawrence.

Mary Maloney (Goodwin) born about 1849. Came to the USA and lived in Boston. Married and had 2 daughters.

New info: I recently found the 1821 census of Galway on line which brought me to Kilreekil. Except for James the first names of these people listed match the names of my family members so I am hoping there might be a connection.

Residents of a house #4 in Glebe of Drimnacourty (Kilreekil, Galway)

Maloney, Peter  age 58 occupation labrourer

Maloney, Catherine age 75, mother,

Maloney, Margaret 45, sister, flax spinner

Residents of a house #4 in Drimnacourty (Kilreekil, Galway)

Murray, James, age 5 Grandson

Murray, Mary, no age listed, granddaughter

James and Mary are living with grandmother Margaret Donellan, 55, wjidow, her sons William, 29, James, 12, and daughters Anne Donellan, 27, Catherine Donellan, 25, and Bridget Donellan, 20. Since all the daughters listed used Donellan for a last name, I wonder if the parents of these 2 children, James and Mary, are dead.

I'm trying to see if there is a connection between these families in 1821, and Denis Maloney and Margaret Murray, whose 1st child Peter was born in 1845. I can't find a Denis Maloney in Kilreekil in the Griffiths Valuation. I also can't find anyone  in the 1901 or 1911 census that might match my family. I wonder if Denis and Margaret Murray Maloney had any other children who stayed behind in Ireland when Peter and Mary came to the USA.

I hope to return to Ireland soon and I would like to visit the townland they lived in.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I think it would be difficult to link James aged 5 and his sister Mary Murray to your Moloney family simply from the evidence of this Census information. Do the Donnellan?s play any part in your family, as their grandmother is noted as Margaret Donnellan, a widow. So their mother must have been a Donnellan and their father a Murray. It may that the parents died or they may have emigrated, to later have the children sent to them or they may have intended leaving the children there.

In relation to Peter, aged 58, his mother is listed as Catherine in 1821. Again, there is no way to show or see how we could link this family with your ancestors without further information. By 1901 the only Murray living in Kilreekil is in the townland of Ballnalaur. Have you thought about using the online phone book to try to link up with anyone of the family name in Kilkeekil on the off-chance they have some further information? If you have time on your trip to Ireland it might be a good idea to visit the Valuation Office and look at the cancelled books for this townland. These trace the holders of the land up to the 1980s and sometimes later from the time of Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864). Really though what we need to establish is a viable link so that we could discount (or include) the Murray/Maloney families in 1821.

We don?t not have a volunteer in Kilreekil but I hope one of our volunteers on the boards will be able to offer some pointers.

Let us know how you get on
