Hello,

My 2nd great grandfather Michael Rabbitt was born in Killimordaly in 1825. I think his father was called Timothy. I have no other information regarding siblings or his mother's name.

Michael joined the 9th Regiment of the Irish Army in 1843 from these records I got his birth details) and spent 16 years in India where he married and had the first of his four children. One child was born 'on the high seas' as the family were returning back home in 1862. I suspect they initially returned to Ireland as|I cannot find any record of them in the censuses until 1891 when the family were living in the Manchester area.

I wonder how easy it would be to search the Irish records to see if they returned to Galway from India in 1862?

  • Hi Angie,

Well the births, deaths and marriages start in 1864 so that'll help. The church records exist too so they may have also acted as witnesses on events that they were't directly involved in. I've seen the Kiltullagh records and they are remarkably clear to read (in comparison to neighbouring parishes).

Michael was one of many Galway men who enlisted and dozens from Killimordaly, Kiltulla, Kilconierin etc. who served in India at this time. in fact, there was at least one Kilconierin man in the 9th alongside him(their descendants still live there).

    Hope this helps.

  • Angie, just to add to that, I checked out graveyard records that I have to hand. Not coming up with Rabbitt or variiations of. I do know that their are families in Athenry with this surname though and as the parish of Kiltullagh Killimordaly joins Athenry, you might like to try searching the Athenry records too.

best of luck with your search
